Falzes, a municipality in the Val Pusteria near Brunico
Falzes lies in the Val Pusteria, the broad alpine valley that crosses South Tyrol from west to east, just a few kilometres north of Brunico, the area's main town. The municipality occupies a sun-facing terrace at the foot of the Kronplatz massif, with open views over the surrounding mountains and the valley floor followed by the Rienza river. The municipality also includes the hamlet of Issengo and borders the municipality of Chienes, in a territory of rural character and predominantly German-speaking population. The historic core gathers around the parish church, while all around stretch farmsteads, hay meadows and woods climbing towards the higher slopes. Its proximity to Brunico, the valley's rail and commercial hub, makes Falzes a convenient base for exploring the Val Pusteria and the neighbouring ski areas, while retaining a quiet, residential character, far from the large tourist flows of the lower valley.
The Kronplatz and skiing
Falzes is one of the municipalities facing the Kronplatz (Plan de Corones), the rounded mountain that dominates the Val Pusteria and hosts one of South Tyrol's best-known ski areas. From the Falzes side, lifts connect the village to the area's slopes, used in winter by Italian and foreign skiers thanks to the wide network of runs, high-altitude mountain huts and views ranging from the Dolomites to the Zillertal Alps. Its position away from the more crowded centres of the ski area makes Falzes a quieter base for those seeking skiing without giving up easy access to the lifts. In the warmer season, the same mountain, also reachable by cable car, becomes ground for hiking and mountain biking, with trails winding through high-altitude pastures. The link between the village and the Kronplatz nonetheless remains chiefly a winter one, with skiing as the main driver of local tourism.
Castel Schöneck
Above the village of Falzes rises Castel Schöneck (Falzes Castle), a manor of medieval origin that dominates the village from a rocky spur. The fortification, tied to the feudal history of the Val Pusteria, originally watched over the valley floor routes and the connections between the area's various settlements, at a time when control of transit held great strategic and economic importance. Over the centuries the castle underwent alterations and changes of ownership, yet it has kept the austere layout typical of South Tyrolean manors, with walls, towers and a profile that stands out sharply against the surrounding mountain landscape. Today Castel Schöneck is the municipality's main historical landmark, visible from much of the valley and a point of reference for those travelling the roads and paths linking Falzes to the nearby hamlets.
The Issinger Weiher
In the hamlet of Issengo, a short distance from the centre of Falzes, lies the Issinger Weiher, a small bathing lake set in a quiet wooded setting. Surrounded by meadows and trees, in the warmer season the lake offers a cool alternative to summer days in the mountains, with facilities for a rest stop and footpaths that allow a full circuit around it. Its waters, fed by local springs, keep a relatively low temperature even in the hottest months, a feature common to many alpine lakes in the area. The site is frequented mainly by families and valley residents looking for a sheltered spot for a swim or a walk without tackling the higher altitudes of the Kronplatz. The Issinger Weiher is thus a small but significant natural point of interest within the municipal territory, complementing the area's offerings more geared towards winter sport.
Farmsteads, nature and hiking in the valley
The territory of Falzes preserves an agricultural landscape of scattered farmsteads, many of them still active, dotting the slopes between the valley floor and the higher woods. Hay meadows, livestock enclosures and small farm tracks trace a rural pattern typical of the Val Pusteria, where mountain farming coexists with tourist activities linked to skiing and hiking. From the village, trails climb towards the slopes of the Kronplatz and the surrounding coniferous woods, suited to walks of varying difficulty and enjoyed outside the winter season too. Running through the valley floor is also the Val Pusteria cycle path, one of South Tyrol's most frequented cycle-tourism routes, linking Brunico and the valley's other centres and offering an easy way to explore the area at a gentle pace. Together, the farmsteads, trails and cycle path make Falzes a destination suited also to those seeking direct contact with the mountains beyond the ski slopes.
