La historia de Contà
Contà in the Val di Non: the Union of Cunevo, Flavon and Terres
Contà lies in the lower Val di Non, the valley carved by the Noce torrent between the Mendola Pass and the plain of Mezzolombardo, a few kilometres from Cles and from the provincial capital Trento. The municipality was established on 1 January 2016 through the merger of three historic municipalities, Cunevo, Flavon and Terres, which stand close together along the slope climbing toward the Dolomiti di Brenta and which, for centuries, while remaining administratively distinct, had shared the same feudal jurisdiction and the collective management of high-altitude pastures. A forced unification had already been imposed under fascism in 1928 and then dissolved after the war; the return to union, this time chosen through a consultative referendum, gave the three villages back a shared administrative identity, with its seat set in Terres, while Flavon remains the historic and religious reference centre and Cunevo the oldest agricultural core. The name chosen for the new municipality, Contà, recalls precisely the medieval contado that had bound these places together since the Middle Ages.
The Apple Orchards of the Val di Non
Just downstream from Contà the Noce torrent, which flows along the municipality's western boundary, widens into the Lago di Santa Giustina, the large artificial reservoir created in 1951 by a dam over 150 metres high, today the scenic heart of the Val di Non and a destination for walks and electric boat trips. Upstream and downstream of the lake, the river has carved narrow gorges through the rock over the centuries, a characteristic feature of the lower valley that Contà overlooks. Within the municipality's territory stands Castel Flavon, the stronghold of the ancient Counts of Flavon who dominated the area in the 13th century before being defeated by the Counts of Tyrol, while not far away lies Castel Corona, another trace of the area's medieval defensive system. Alongside these stand the two Palazzo Spaur buildings, in Flavon and in Terres, 17th-century noble residences built by the family that administered justice in this corner of the Val di Non for almost five hundred years.

The Rural Villages and the Landscape at the Foot of the Dolomiti di Brenta
The three villages that make up Contà each keep their own character. Terres, the municipal seat, spreads over a plateau overlooking the valley and is today the hub of local services. Flavon, the oldest from a religious point of view, preserves the parish church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, dating back to the 13th century, and long held the administrative seat of the contado. Cunevo, the agricultural heart of the three, is documented as far back as 1203 and preserves an 11th-century fortified tower, incorporated into a private house. Between the three villages runs the Sentiero Margherita, a flat path of about four kilometres following a 19th-century irrigation channel through a pine wood, while nearby lies the small Lago Fontana. Behind the orchards, the territory climbs toward Monte Corno and Monte Sabbionare, within the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, where the communities of Contà hold collective rights over the pastures of Alpe Flavona, at the head of the Val di Tovel, with Malga Flavona and Rifugio Doss della Quarta as waypoints.
History and Experiences to Live in Contà
The history of Contà is that of a small feudal world later turned into an agricultural community. Between the 12th and 13th centuries the territory was ruled by the Counts of Flavon, lords invested by the Prince-Bishopric of Trento, until in 1254 the castle passed to Bonaventura di Cunevo and, by the end of the century, the Counts of Tyrol took control of it. From 1334 the Spaur family, originally from Burgstall, administered justice in the three villages for almost five hundred years, leaving behind palaces, coats of arms and a layout of the territory still legible today. In the 20th century, after the forced unification imposed by the fascist regime in 1928 and dissolved after the war, the three municipalities chose in 2016, through a referendum, to become a single community again. Visitors to Contà today can alternate discovering the historic centres of Cunevo, Flavon and Terres with walks along the Sentiero Margherita, apple tastings at the area's farms, and hikes toward Alpe Flavona or along the shores of the Lago di Santa Giustina.
