La historia de Massa
Introduction and location
Massa lies in northern Tuscany, between the peaks of the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian coast, and shares with neighbouring Carrara the role of provincial capital of Massa-Carrara. The municipal territory takes in both the historic core at the foot of the mountains, overlooked by the Malaspina Castle, and the coastal strip of Marina di Massa with its sandy beaches. This dual character, part mountain and part sea, makes Massa a good base for hikes in the Apuan Alps Regional Park as well as days spent by the water, all within a single municipality.
History
Massa's history is closely tied to the Malaspina family, who in the Middle Ages had the fortified stronghold now known as the Malaspina Castle built to watch over the city. Later home to a small autonomous state, the Duchy of Massa and Principality of Carrara, under the Cybo-Malaspina the city gained new buildings, including the Palazzo Ducale, also called Palazzo Rosso, built as the dukes' residence. Over the following centuries the duchy passed to other ruling houses, until the unification of Italy, when Massa became part of the Kingdom of Italy and later of Tuscany.
Nature and landscape
The territory of Massa displays a very varied landscape, stretching from the peaks of the Apuan Alps, known for their rock faces and marble, down to the coastal plain that slopes toward the sea. The mountains, partly within the Apuan Alps Regional Park, offer hiking trails, valleys and ridge-top villages, while the Marina di Massa shoreline alternates equipped sandy beaches with stretches of pine wood separating the town from the sea. This contrast between high mountains and low coast, only a few kilometres apart, is one of the distinctive features of the province of Massa-Carrara.
What to do
In Massa, cultural visits and time outdoors can easily be combined. In the historic centre you can stroll past the Palazzo Ducale, on Piazza degli Aranci, and climb up to the Malaspina Castle for views over the city and the coast. Nature lovers can head into the Apuan Alps for walks along trails and through mountain villages, or reach Marina di Massa within minutes for a day at the beach, with equipped sandy shores and walks through the pine wood. The closeness of mountain and sea makes it possible to combine different itineraries even within a single day.
Flavours and traditions
The cuisine of the Massa area blends influences from the sea and the mountains. Along the coast fish-based dishes are common, with fried mixed small fish among the most typical choices, while in the Apennine hinterland the food tradition is linked to the chestnut trees of the Apuan Alps, with chestnut flour used for sweets and local preparations, and to the olive oil produced on the hillsides. As elsewhere in the province of Massa-Carrara, the table reflects the closeness of Liguria and Emilia, in a range of flavours that shifts as you move from the coast up toward the mountains.
