Introduction and location
Campagnatico stands on a hilltop in the Maremma area of Grosseto province, overlooking the valley of the Ombrone river. The village lies a short distance from both Grosseto and the border with the province of Siena, in a position that makes it a natural crossing point between the Tyrrhenian coast and the hills of inland Tuscany. The medieval settlement still keeps the compact layout typical of hilltop villages, with narrow lanes and views stretching from clay ravines to the woods of Monte Amiata, visible on the horizon on clear days.
History and origins
The origins of Campagnatico date back to the medieval period, when the area belonged to the domains of the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, feudal lords who controlled much of the Tuscan Maremma between the 11th and 13th centuries. Fortified to defend the border between Aldobrandeschi territory and the Republic of Siena, the village gradually came under Sienese influence, following the fate of many castles in the area. The historic core still shows traces of the old walls and defensive layout, evidence of a past marked by rivalry between local lordships and Tuscan city-states.
Nature and landscape
The landscape around Campagnatico is classic rolling Maremma countryside: cultivated fields, vineyards, olive groves and stretches of woodland alternate along the slopes running down toward the Ombrone river. The municipal territory lies within the Montecucco area, known for quality winemaking, and offers many country routes suited to walking, horseback riding and cycling. The Ombrone, one of the main rivers of southern Tuscany, shapes the landscape with its bends and riverside vegetation, while the hills surrounding the village provide panoramic viewpoints toward the sea and toward Monte Amiata.
