The panoramic suburb above Thessaloniki

Panorama sits on the slopes of Mount Chortiatis, southeast of Thessaloniki, in an elevated position that gave the suburb both its name and its most recognisable identity. Its origins as a summer retreat for Thessaloniki families seeking cooler air shaped its character: wide streets, villas with gardens and an urban fabric more relaxed than the density of the city centre. Today Panorama is a fully-fledged municipality, yet it retains that hillside-neighbourhood atmosphere designed for unhurried living, away from the traffic and noise of the metropolis below, while still remaining an integral part of its metropolitan area.

The view over the gulf and the city

The true protagonist of Panorama remains the view itself: from its lookout points and café terraces, the eye sweeps over Thessaloniki spread along the coastline, over the port, and out to the Thermaic Gulf opening toward the Aegean Sea. On clear days the view reaches the blue waters of the gulf, while at sunset the city lights come on one by one, creating a particularly striking scene. This panoramic position has always been a source of pride for residents and the main draw for those coming up from Thessaloniki for a day trip, making Panorama a privileged vantage point over the whole metropolitan area.

An elegant residential neighbourhood

Panorama is known as one of the most elegant and affluent residential areas of the Thessaloniki region. Its streets are lined with stately villas, well-kept gardens and low-rise buildings, in marked contrast to the density of the city centre. This upmarket residential character has over time attracted wealthy families, professionals and diplomats, reinforcing the suburb's image as an exclusive place to live. Despite its widespread elegance, Panorama retains a friendly, approachable atmosphere, with green spaces, playgrounds and a neighbourhood rhythm of life set apart from the fast pace of the city.

Trigona Panoramatos and the pastry shops

Panorama owes part of its national fame to a pastry born right here: trigona Panoramatos, a thin, crisp triangle of filo pastry, fried or baked, filled with generous amounts of custard cream and often dusted with icing sugar. Created in the suburb's pastry shops, the trigona has become a sweet icon found throughout Greece, but it is in Panorama that the long-established shops considered custodians of the original recipe are found. Wandering among the display windows of these shops, often paired with a café boasting a view, is an almost obligatory experience for anyone visiting the suburb, blending pastry tradition with neighbourhood conviviality.

Cafés, greenery and quality of life

Beyond the view and the pastries, Panorama offers a quality of life that makes it a favoured spot for a break from Thessaloniki's heat and pace. Its cafés with panoramic terraces serve as meeting points for residents and visitors alike, while the green areas and proximity to the Chortiatis forest bring noticeably fresher, cleaner air than the city below. Tidy squares, tree-lined pavements and a generally calm atmosphere complete the picture of a suburb built for quality everyday living, where time seems to flow at a different pace than the urban bustle.

Location and how to experience it

One of Panorama's greatest strengths is its location: although perched on the slopes of Mount Chortiatis, the suburb lies only a few kilometres from central Thessaloniki, easily reached by car or local transport links. This closeness makes Panorama an ideal destination for a half-day trip from Thessaloniki, perhaps in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset over the gulf, or a quiet base for those seeking a more secluded stay while still close to all the city's services and attractions. Visitors to Panorama can combine scenic walks, indulgent stops at historic pastry shops and relaxed moments at view cafés into a single, well-balanced experience.
