A territory between Valsugana and the Lagorai
The Mocheni Valley, called Bersntol in the Mocheno language, is a side valley of the Valsugana opening east of Pergine Valsugana, in the province of Trento. Crossed by the Fersina stream, it climbs gradually from cultivated valley floors up to the pastures and forests bordering the Lagorai range, on the boundary with Val di Fiemme and Val di Cembra. The territory includes the municipalities of Fierozzo, Frassilongo and Palù del Fersina, the historic heart of the Mocheno linguistic island, with Sant'Orsola Terme marking the entrance from the Pergine side. The valley is reachable by car in a few minutes from the main town, yet remains a secluded, human-scale territory.
History and identity: the Mocheno linguistic island
What sets the valley apart is the Mocheno language (Bersntoler Sprache), a Bavarian-Germanic idiom still spoken today by part of the local population, a legacy of the medieval settlement of miners and woodcutters who arrived from Tyrolean and Bavarian valleys to work the area's mineral deposits. For centuries the extraction of silver and other minerals was a mainstay of the local economy, leaving galleries and traces still visible in the territory today. The Mocheno Cultural Institute (Bersntoler Kulturinstitut), based at the Filzerhof in Fierozzo, has long worked to safeguard the language, traditions and historical memory of this small minority community.
Landscape and nature between forests and the Great War
The landscape of the Mocheni Valley alternates hay meadows and scattered farmsteads in the lower valley with dense fir and larch forests climbing toward high-altitude mountain huts, up to the rocky ridges of the Lagorai, one of Trentino's least developed mountain groups. The Fersina stream punctuates the valley floor with small waterfalls and gorges, while trails climbing toward Passo del Redebus offer wide views over the Fiemme Dolomites and the Valsugana. Many hiking routes also retrace the trenches and pathways of the First World War, when the valley lay along the front line between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy.
Villages and places to see
Fierozzo (Vlarotz), with its hamlets of San Francesco and Roveda, is home to the Filzerhof, seat of the Mocheno Cultural Institute with museum trails devoted to Mocheno language and civilisation. Frassilongo (Garait) preserves the traditional wood-and-stone farmstead architecture typical of the valley. Palù del Fersina (Palae en Bersntol), the highest and smallest municipality, is renowned for the evocative Sentiero dei Sospiri with its themed wooden sculptures, and also holds traces of the valley's old mining activity. Sant'Orsola Terme, at the valley's entrance, is a good starting point for exploring the area and for reaching the Panarotta skiing and hiking area.
Food, wine and local traditions
The cuisine of the Mocheni Valley reflects its rural and Germanic roots: mountain-hut cheeses, speck, traditional cured meats, mountain potatoes and wild berries such as blueberries and raspberries accompany typical dishes like canederli and flour-and-potato specialities handed down through Mocheno families. Mountain honey, artisanal distillates and garden produce round out a simple, genuine table. Folk traditions, traditional costumes and festivals tied to the farming calendar and to the memory of the Mocheno community remain a distinctive feature, kept alive through the work of local cultural associations and the Mocheno Cultural Institute.
