Torri del Benaco is one of the most photogenic villages on the Verona shore of Lake Garda, wedged between a working fishing harbour and the crenellated profile of the Scaliger Castle. The town has kept its medieval layout, with cobbled lanes, porticoes and coloured houses looking straight onto the water, while the hills behind hold centuries-old olive groves that give the area its nickname, the Riviera degli Olivi. Unlike some of the lake's more glamorous resorts, Torri has kept an authentic fishing-village character: the small harbour is still busy with working boats alongside tourist craft. The castle, built in 1383 for Antonio della Scala on older fortifications, now houses a museum telling the story of local farming and fishing life, including a rare eighteenth-century citrus garden open to visitors. A starting point for walks up Monte Baldo and for the ferry to the Lombardy shore, Torri del Benaco makes a good base for travellers who want Garda without the crowds of Sirmione.

The story

The story of Torri del Benaco

The Scaliger Castle and its museum

Built in 1383 on the ruins of an older fortification, the Scaliger Castle dominates the harbour with its crenellated towers. Since 1983 it has housed the Castello Scaligero Museum, arranged in rooms dedicated to the area's traditional trades: an olive room, with a transport sledge and a small domestic press rebuilt using original stone parts; a fishing room, full of nets and tools used by lake fishermen; and a caulkers' room devoted to the building and repair of fishing boats. In the inner courtyard lies a citrus garden dating from 1760, almost the only one still open to visitors anywhere on the lake. Climbing the tower rewards you with one of the finest views over the eastern basin of Garda, reaching as far as Monte Baldo.

The harbour and the old town

The small harbour of Torri del Benaco is still the beating heart of the village, with fishing boats moored alongside the ferries linking the Verona shore to the Lombardy side. Around the port lies a compact old town of houses rising straight from the water, low porticoes and small squares such as the one dominated by the Clock Tower. Wandering the lanes you come across Corte Aleardi, a still-inhabited example of fortified rural architecture, and countless corners that have made Torri one of the most photographed villages on the eastern shore of Garda. In the evening, as the fishing boats return and the lakefront lights come on, the village reveals its most authentic side, far from the mass tourism of some other lake resorts.

The Riviera degli Olivi and its olive oil

The hills surrounding Torri del Benaco form part of the so-called Riviera degli Olivi, the northernmost strip of Europe where olive growing achieves genuine quality, thanks to the mild climate the lake sustains. The terraced groves, often held up by dry-stone walls, yield a DOP Garda extra-virgin oil with a delicate profile, less bitter and peppery than oils from further south. Several local mills open to visitors during the harvest, between October and November, to show the cold-pressing process. Walking among the olive trees, perhaps along the paths linking Torri to its hillside hamlets, is a good way to discover an agricultural landscape that has coexisted for centuries with the lake's tourist vocation.

The church of the Santissima Trinità and the zodiac wheel

A short walk from the castle stands the small church of the Santissima Trinità, home to one of the most curious fresco cycles on Lake Garda: a fifteenth-century zodiac wheel that combines astrological symbols with scenes of everyday life and religious allegories, a rarity in Venetian sacred art. The church is modest in size and can be visited in a few minutes, but it rewards anyone interested in medieval iconography. The old town also holds other minor religious buildings and traces of the village's long history, ruled first by the Della Scala family and later by the Republic of Venice, which turned it into a strategic outpost on the lake.

Monte Baldo and hiking

Rising behind Torri del Benaco is Monte Baldo, nicknamed the Hortus Europae for the richness of its alpine flora, with over 40 endemic species. Several trails start from the municipality's hillside hamlets and climb above 1,500 metres, with views stretching from the lake to the Prealps. For those who prefer not to walk far, the Malcesine cable car, a short drive or ferry ride away, carries visitors comfortably to the summit. In winter Baldo also offers a few modest ski runs, while in summer it draws hikers, cyclists and paragliders who launch from the ridges above the lake.

Beaches, ferries and lake life

Torri del Benaco alternates small pebble beaches with rockier stretches of shore, good for swimming and for water sports such as windsurfing and sailing, helped by the steady afternoon Ora wind. Ferries leave the harbour for Toscolano-Maderno on the Lombardy shore, a historic crossing that lets visitors explore the whole lake without driving all the way around. The pedestrian stretch of the lakefront is the evening meeting point for locals and visitors alike, with bars and restaurants serving lake fish alongside classic Veronese dishes. Its central position also makes Torri a good base for visiting Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine without changing accommodation.
