Santa Caterina d'Este is, on paper, one of the youngest municipalities in the Veneto: it was created on 22 January 2024 from the merger of Carceri and Vighizzolo d'Este, in the lower Padua plain a few kilometres from Este. Its name comes from the Santa Caterina canal that crosses the territory. The landscape is typical of the southern Padua plain: cultivated fields, canals, a few scattered houses and an agricultural pace of life, far from major tourist flows. There is, however, a concrete reason to stop here: in the hamlet of Carceri stands the Abbey of Santa Maria delle Carceri, a monastic complex with almost a thousand years of history. Around it, the quiet countryside and the closeness to Este and the Euganean Hills complete a simple but genuine picture, suited to those seeking an authentic stop rather than large visitor numbers.

The story

The story of Santa Caterina d'Este

A new municipality, born from two old villages

Santa Caterina d'Este has existed as an administrative body only since 2024, when residents of Carceri and Vighizzolo d'Este approved the merger of the two municipalities in a referendum. It is the third such operation in the Padua area, after Due Carrare and Borgo Veneto. The official coat of arms, adopted in November 2025, combines the old arms of Carceri and Vighizzolo, almost as if to hold together two identities that remain clearly recognisable across the territory. With just over two thousand residents across nearly 27 square kilometres of plain, it is not a municipality built for large visitor numbers, but its recent history says a lot about the administrative changes underway in the Veneto's small rural communities.

The Abbey of Santa Maria delle Carceri

The real reason to make a detour to Santa Caterina d'Este is the Abbey of Santa Maria delle Carceri, in the hamlet of Carceri. Its origins date back to before the year 1000, with a church consecrated in 1189 by the Portuense canons; in 1407 Pope Gregory XII entrusted the complex to Camaldolese monks, who expanded it with four cloisters, a library and a genuine academy of studies, while also continuing land reclamation works in the surrounding countryside. Sold in 1690 to help finance the Republic of Venice's war against the Ottoman Empire, the abbey remained abandoned for a long time before being restored in the 20th century. Today it can be visited, and its cloisters and historic halls tell the story of almost a thousand years of monastic life in the lower Padua plain.

Between canals and countryside in the lower Padua plain

The landscape of Santa Caterina d'Este is the classic one of the lower Padua plain: fields stretching as far as the eye can see, tree rows and a network of canals, including the Santa Caterina canal that gives the municipality its name, alongside the nearby Bisatto and Frassine watercourses historically tied to the abbey's land reclamation work. There are no large urban centres or widespread monuments here: this is a fully agricultural territory where daily life follows the rhythm of the crops. For slow cycling enthusiasts, the secondary roads along the canals offer quiet routes suitable for families too, in a rural setting that is genuine rather than spectacular.

Vighizzolo d'Este, the other half of the municipality

Less well known than Carceri, the hamlet of Vighizzolo d'Este completes the new municipality with an even more markedly rural character, made up of farmhouses, agricultural courtyards and small businesses tied to the land. It has no major monuments comparable to the abbey, but it well represents the agricultural soul that binds together the two communities merged in 2024. It is the kind of hamlet that rarely appears in travel guides, but that honestly tells the story of rural Padua's lesser-told side, far from the Euganean Hills and the more travelled routes.

Este and the Euganean Hills, just a step away

The practical advantage of Santa Caterina d'Este is its location: the historic town of Este, with its Carraresi castle, the Museo Nazionale Atestino and its old centre, is just a few minutes' drive away, as are the first foothills of the Euganean Hills, with their thermal spas and hillside villages. Visitors staying in the area can therefore use Santa Caterina d'Este as a quiet, low-cost base for exploring better-known attractions nearby, returning each evening to the calm of the countryside. It is a trade-off worth considering for those not looking for nightlife but for convenient access.
