San Biagio di Callalta is a dispersed municipality on the Treviso plain, made up of the main town and several distinct hamlets, the best known being Fagarè della Battaglia. The town's name already tells its story: it derives from Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, and from the Callis Alta, the ancient raised road built to protect settlements from Piave floods. It is a territory shaped over centuries by the work of Benedictine monks from the Monastier abbey, who reclaimed and made farmable land once covered in forest. This is not a town of grand monuments, but its recent history carries real weight: Fagarè, whose epithet della Battaglia recalls the fighting of the First World War along the Piave, shows how deeply this stretch of plain was marked by the conflict. Today San Biagio di Callalta lives on agriculture, small industry and a quiet provincial life, just a short distance from Treviso.

The story

The story of San Biagio di Callalta

History and origins

The territory was inhabited from the time of the ancient Veneti, but its stable settlement is owed above all to Benedictine monks from the Monastier abbey, who between the tenth and eleventh centuries reclaimed the land and gave rise to the settlements of Rovarè, Fagarè and Sant'Andrea di Barbarana. The name San Biagio appears from the fourteenth century, when the parish moved along the Callis Alta, the raised road built to hold back Piave floods, giving rise to the town that is today the municipal seat, established by Napoleonic decree in 1807.

What to see

The municipality's heritage consists above all of parish churches in its various hamlets and a well-preserved rural landscape. In Fagarè della Battaglia there are memorials and monuments recalling the fighting of the First World War, when the village found itself on the front line after the rout of Caporetto. It is a place of memory more than grand architecture, but for that very reason able to convey honestly a crucial chapter of twentieth-century Italian history.

Nature and surroundings

The municipal territory is crossed by the Piave river, whose banks offer cycling and walking routes through the Treviso countryside. The surrounding plain, with its canals and cultivated fields, reflects the typical farming landscape of the Marca Trevigiana, dotted with small rural hamlets.

Food, wine and local products

Local cuisine follows the tradition of the Treviso plain, with radicchio, asparagus and local wines among the most valued products. Small family-run farms selling their seasonal produce directly are common, in keeping with the town's rural character.

Events and traditions

In Fagarè, commemorative ceremonies tied to the First World War are held periodically, while the town's various hamlets host traditional patron saint festivals, simple moments of community life shaped by the farming calendar.

How to get there and location

San Biagio di Callalta lies a few kilometers southeast of Treviso, along the route toward Venice, and is crossed by the Triestina state road. Its location makes it convenient both for those working in Treviso and for those heading to the Venetian lagoon.

Local life and economy

The town's economy combines agriculture, small-scale manufacturing and a fair amount of commuting toward Treviso and Venice. It is a mostly residential area that has managed to retain a rural character despite its proximity to the province's main urban centers.
