Rovolon is a municipality in the province of Padua located in the western part of the Euganean Hills, the group of hills of volcanic origin that rises in isolation from the Padua plain. The municipal territory, made up of several hamlets including Bastia, spreads across a hilly landscape of woods, vineyards and chestnut groves, with Monte Gallo and other minor summits offering starting points for hiking. Rovolon borders the municipality of Teolo, within whose territory stands the Abbey of Praglia, the celebrated Benedictine monastery that is one of the most visited destinations in the Euganean Hills: although outside Rovolon's municipal boundaries, the abbey is reachable within a few minutes and lies within the same hill district, so much so that the two territories share roads, trails and a common outdoor offering. The local economy rests on hillside farming, with small wineries producing wine under the Colli Euganei DOC denomination, and on a still modest but growing nature-based tourism tied to trekking and outdoor life.

The story

The story of Rovolon

In the western Euganean Hills

Rovolon occupies the western side of the Euganean Hills, the group of hills of volcanic origin rising in isolation on the plain south-west of Padua, within the boundaries of the Euganean Hills Regional Park. The landscape alternates coppice woodland, terraced vineyards and cultivated land, with views stretching from the hills toward the surrounding plain.

Monte Gallo and the hiking trails

The municipal territory includes Monte Gallo and other minor summits of the Euganean Hills, with a network of marked trails crossing woods and ridgelines, used by hikers and cyclists. The routes connect Rovolon to the other hill towns in the area, offering a quieter alternative to the busier trails of the central hills, such as those around Monte Venda.

Bastia and proximity to the Abbey of Praglia

The hamlet of Bastia lies close to the border with the municipality of Teolo, where the Abbey of Praglia stands, a Benedictine monastery founded in the Middle Ages and known for its architecture, cloisters and the monks' book-restoration workshop. Although the abbey does not fall within Rovolon's administrative territory, its proximity makes it a natural visit during a stay or hike in the area, and the trails connecting it to the surrounding hills also cross Rovolon's territory.

Vineyards and Euganean Hills wine

Rovolon's hillsides host small wineries falling within the Colli Euganei DOC denomination area, one of the oldest wine zones in Veneto. Hillside viticulture coexists with woodland and plots given over to other crops, in an agrarian mosaic typical of this protected area.

Chestnut woods and forest produce

In the more wooded parts of the municipality there are chestnut groves keeping alive an autumn harvest tradition widespread across the whole of the Euganean Hills. Together with other forest produce, the chestnut contributes to a simple local food offering, tied to the seasons rather than to a structured tourism industry.
