Grezzana lies in the Valpantena, the valley that opens up north of Verona towards the Lessinia plateau, just a few kilometres from the city. It is a foothill town combining two ancient vocations: winemaking, with vineyards spreading across the first hills in the Valpolicella tradition, and the quarrying and working of Lessinia stone, an activity for which the area is known well beyond the province of Verona. The town preserves religious sites of great historical value, such as the ancient parish church at its heart, documented as early as 1145, and a settlement that has grown up along the road climbing the valley since the Middle Ages, when the community gained municipal autonomy in 1214. Grezzana is not a destination of great tourist appeal, but it captures well the character of the Valpantena: hard working, tied to the land and to stone, with a hilly landscape that gently leads up towards the plateau.

The story

The story of Grezzana

History and origins

The community of Grezzana gained autonomy as a municipality in 1214, freeing itself from the lordship of the local canons upon payment of a ransom of 1600 lire. From 1405 the Valpantena became part of the Republic of Venice, a bond that deeply shaped the development of the area in the centuries that followed. The religious heart of the town is the ancient Pieve delle Sante Maria ed Elisabetta, documented as early as 1145, while the nearby church of San Clemente has even older origins, dating back to 1043.

What to see

The Church of San Clemente, built as a chapel of the Grezzana parish under the episcopate of the Verona bishop Walterio, is one of the oldest and most significant religious monuments in the Valpantena. Next to it, the ancient Pieve di Santa Maria ed Elisabetta preserves architectural layers that tell almost a thousand years of the area's religious history. The centre of Grezzana, with its houses built from local stone, reflects the age old use of the material quarried nearby.

Nature and surroundings

The municipal territory, covering about fifty two square kilometres, rises from the Valpantena valley floor to the edge of the Lessinia plateau, offering a varied landscape that shifts from hillside vineyards to higher woodlands. It is an area popular for walks and hikes, with views that gradually open up over the Verona plain as the elevation increases.

Food, wine and local produce

Besides wine production, which belongs to the Valpolicella tradition of the area, Grezzana is known for the working of Lessinia marble and stone, exported worldwide: the hamlet of Lugo di Grezzana is home to the Consorzio Marmisti della Valpantena, a reference point for a sector that has flanked agriculture here for centuries. Local cuisine follows Verona tradition, with meat based dishes, mountain cheeses and the wines of the valley.

Local life and economy

With around ten thousand eight hundred inhabitants, Grezzana is today one of the more populous towns in the Valpantena, its economy resting on a balance between agriculture, winemaking and the stone sector, historically the most distinctive activity of the area alongside the production of marble and building stone.

Getting there

Grezzana lies about ten kilometres north east of Verona, easily reached by car along the road that climbs the Valpantena towards Lessinia. Its proximity to Verona makes it a convenient stop for anyone wanting to combine a visit to the city with an excursion into the first hills.
