Galzignano Terme lies at the heart of the Colli Euganei, the volcanic hills that rise from the Padua plain south of the city. The town is best known for its thermal waters, exploited since Roman times and today the basis of a range of spa establishments devoted to wellness and hydrothermal treatment, in continuity with the tradition of nearby Abano and Montegrotto. The municipal territory covers a hilly landscape of woods, vineyards and olive groves, dominated by Monte Rua, one of the highest peaks of the Euganean Hills, home to the Camaldolese Hermitage, a place of silence and enclosure open to visitors only on set days. In the hamlet of Valsanzibio stands the celebrated historic garden of Villa Barbarigo, one of the best-preserved Italian-style gardens in Europe. The hills yield Colli Euganei DOC wine and extra-virgin olive oil, produce that supports a local economy also tied to spa tourism and hiking along the trails of the Euganean Hills Regional Park.

The story

The story of Galzignano Terme

Spas and the wellness tradition

Galzignano's thermal waters originate in the Euganean hydrothermal basin, fed by rainwater that seeps deep underground and re-emerges heated after a long subterranean journey. The town's spa establishments, developed from the twentieth century onward, offer hydropinic treatments, mud therapy and wellness programmes, set within a green landscape that distinguishes them from the more urban spa centres of Abano and Montegrotto.

Monte Rua and the Camaldolese Hermitage

Monte Rua, at 415 metres, is one of the highest peaks of the Euganean Hills and its summit is home to the Rua Hermitage, founded by Camaldolese monks in the sixteenth century. The complex, still inhabited by a monastic community, is open to visitors only on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, in keeping with its enclosed way of life. The path leading up the hill crosses chestnut woods and offers wide views over the Venetian plain.

The garden of Valsanzibio

In the hamlet of Valsanzibio stands the historic garden of Villa Barbarigo, laid out in the seventeenth century and considered one of the best-preserved Italian-style gardens in Europe. The route winds among fountains, statues, a boxwood maze and water features conceived as a symbolic path toward knowledge, and remains today one of the most visited destinations in the Euganean Hills.

Wine and olive oil of the Euganean Hills

The hillsides around Galzignano have been planted with vines and olive trees since ancient times. Local wineries produce Colli Euganei DOC wines, while the olive groves yield an extra-virgin oil valued for the character of the volcanic soil. Several farms in the area offer tastings and direct sales along the roads that link the hillside hamlets.

The Euganean Hills Regional Park

Galzignano Terme lies within the Euganean Hills Regional Park, established to protect the volcanic hill landscape and its biodiversity. A network of marked trails links the town to neighbouring centres and to the park's other peaks, making the area a year-round destination for hiking and cycling.
