The story of Cavaion Veronese
History and origins
Cavaion's origins date back to Roman times, when the territory was crossed by the Via Claudia Augusta, an important route linking Italy to the trans-Alpine area. In the Middle Ages the village was contested by local noble families and suffered destruction and looting, before becoming part of the Republic of Venice's possessions in 1439, which strengthened its defensive structures. The old quarter, known as Strada delle Case Vecchie, still preserves stone houses and the twelfth-century church of San Leonardo, a testament to this long history.
What to see
The historic centre, partly enclosed by ancient walls, is home to the church of San Giovanni Battista, the church of San Rocco and the Palazzo delle Comunità. Walking through the alleys reveals exposed stone houses and small corners that speak of the life of a Veneto farming village. The oldest quarter, Strada delle Case Vecchie, with the small church of San Leonardo, is the most evocative spot for those who love local history away from the main tourist circuits.
Nature and surroundings
Cavaion lies at the gateway to Monte Baldo, a destination for hiking and outdoor sports, with the Malcesine-Monte Baldo cable car reaching the summit in minutes from one of the nearby towns. The municipal territory, made up of moraine hills, vineyards and olive groves, offers panoramic walking and cycling routes with views over Lake Garda, just a few kilometres away.
Food, wine and local products
Cavaion's territory, within the Bardolino production area, is well suited to viticulture, with wineries offering tastings among the hillside rows. Alongside wine, extra virgin olive oil from the Garda hills is another local staple, together with cheeses and cured meats found at the small farms scattered across the area.

Cavaion Veronese lies in the hilly hinterland east of Lake Garda, between the municipality of Bardolino and the Adige river, a short distance from the A22 Brenner motorway exit and the Gardesana state road. It is easily reached by car from Verona, about half an hour away, and makes a convenient base for visiting Garda while avoiding the heavier traffic of the lakeside towns.
Local life and economy
Cavaion's economy remains tied to agriculture, particularly viticulture and olive growing, alongside tourism that benefits from its closeness to Garda without sharing its mass-tourism dynamics. It is a village of a few thousand residents with an agricultural, family-centred pace of life, where accommodation is concentrated mainly in farm stays and small scattered guesthouses.
