Bassano del Grappa, set along the banks of the Brenta River at the foot of the Grappa Massif, is one of the most cherished towns in the Veneto region, weaving together art, history and flavour within an elegant historic centre. Its symbol is the Ponte degli Alpini, the famous wooden Ponte Vecchio designed by Andrea Palladio in 1569, which has linked the two riverbanks for centuries and shelters, at its foot, the historic Nardini Grapperia. Here grappa is not merely a spirit but an identity: the Nardini and Poli distilleries have kept its tradition alive for generations. Strolling between Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi, past the Torre Civica and the Castello degli Ezzelini, visitors breathe the atmosphere of a town of art that has preserved its heritage intact, enriched by refined Bassano ceramics and museums that recount its history, including the painful memory of the Great War on Monte Grappa. An itinerary of bridges, squares, distilleries and remembrance, just steps from the Asolo hills and the Vicenza Prealps.

The story

The story of Bassano del Grappa

The Ponte degli Alpini, a Palladio Masterpiece

The Ponte degli Alpini, also known as Ponte Vecchio, is the symbolic monument of Bassano del Grappa. Designed by Andrea Palladio in 1569 after repeated floods of the Brenta had destroyed earlier structures, the covered wooden bridge combines engineering solidity with architectural elegance, its distinctive truss framework built to withstand the force of the current. Rebuilt several times over the centuries, including after the damage of twentieth-century wars, it is today dedicated to the Alpini corps, who restored it and keep its memory alive. Crossing it on foot, with the river below and the mountains on the horizon, remains one of the most evocative moments of any visit to the town, especially at sunset.

Grappa and the Historic Distilleries

Bassano del Grappa owes much of its fame to grappa itself, the pomace brandy for which the town is one of the historic homes. At the foot of the bridge stands the Nardini Grapperia, founded in 1779 and considered Italy's oldest still-active distillery, with its historic kiosk overlooking the Brenta. A short walk away, the Poli distillery preserves the story of grappa production in its Grappa Museum, from traditional stills to modern techniques. Visiting the distilleries means discovering a craft built on patience and artisanal skill, amid intense aromas and tastings that reveal the deep bond between the town, the river and the vineyards on the surrounding hills.

Bassano Ceramics

Alongside grappa, ceramics represent the other great craft tradition of Bassano del Grappa. Since the sixteenth century the town has developed a fine ceramic production, characterised by bright glazes, floral decorations and shapes that combine function with elegance. Historic workshops and artisan studios continue to hand down this art, visible in the shop windows of the old town and preserved in the city's museum collections. Bassano ceramics, together with the production of nearby Nove, have helped make the area one of the most recognised ceramic districts in the Veneto, valued for the quality of its craftsmanship and its ability to innovate while remaining faithful to traditional techniques.

The Squares and the Historic Centre

The heart of Bassano del Grappa beats between Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi, two urban spaces that tell centuries of town history. Piazza Libertà, with its arcades and frescoed palaces, is the elegant living room of the town, animated by historic cafés and shops; Piazza Garibaldi, more intimate, is dominated by the Torre Civica, a visual landmark rising above the rooftops of the centre. Wandering through the cobbled streets reveals frescoed façades, artisan workshops and glimpses that suddenly open onto the Brenta. The historic centre, compact yet rich in detail, is easily explored on foot, offering constant architectural surprises.

The Castello degli Ezzelini and the Museums

On top of the town hill stands the Castello degli Ezzelini, a medieval fortification that testifies to Bassano's strategic role during the centuries of Ezzelini and later Venetian rule. Nearby, the Museo Civico houses a rich collection of paintings, including works by the Da Ponte family, alongside archaeological and natural history exhibits that trace the story of the area. Not far away is the Museo degli Alpini, dedicated to the military corps that forged a special bond with the town and its symbolic bridge, preserving memorabilia, photographs and testimonies that weave together civilian and military memory in a moving narrative.

Monte Grappa and the Memory of the Great War

Rising above the town is Monte Grappa, the theatre of some of the most dramatic battles of the First World War and today a place of remembrance for the whole country. On its summit stands the Sacrario Militare del Monte Grappa, which holds the remains of thousands of Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers, an imposing and silent monument overlooking the Veneto plain. Climbing up to the Grappa, along panoramic hairpin bends and past historic forts, combines the beauty of the pre-Alpine landscape with a moment of reflection; from here the view stretches from the Dolomites to the Venetian lagoon, revealing the full geographic and historical scale of a land marked by conflict.

Along the Brenta River

The Brenta River is the element that has shaped the history and urban layout of Bassano del Grappa, providing hydraulic power to mills and craft workshops since the Middle Ages. Its banks, today lined with shaded riverside walks, offer striking views of the Ponte degli Alpini and the houses overlooking the water. The river, which rises in the Dolomites and flows down towards the Venetian plain, made Bassano a strategic trading point, particularly for timber floated down from the Alpine valleys. Walking along the Brenta, ideally at sunset, is an authentic way to grasp the deep bond between the town and its river.

Bassano Flavours and Traditions

Bassano's table brings together the flavours of the Venetian plain and the mountains. Bassano white asparagus, celebrated with a historic spring festival, is one of the area's most prized products, traditionally served with hard-boiled eggs and mayonnaise. Alongside mountain-pasture cheeses, cured meats and polenta, grappa remains the common thread of every meal, sipped after dinner or used in traditional recipes. The markets and wine bars of the historic centre offer the perfect chance to discover these products, while traditional osterie preserve recipes handed down through generations, in a balance of simplicity and quality typical of Venetian cuisine.
