The story of Vigo di Fassa

Vigo di Fassa and the Val di Fassa

Vigo di Fassa sits at the centre of the Val di Fassa, one of the best-known Ladin valleys of the Trentino Dolomites, nestled between the Catinaccio and Sella mountain groups. Today it forms part of the municipality of Sèn Jan di Fassa, created by merging the valley's main settlements, yet it retains a strong and recognisable tourist identity, with its characteristic old centre, family-run hotels and traditional shops. Its strategic position, good transport links and closeness to the lifts make it an ideal base for exploring the whole valley.

History and Ladin culture

Vigo di Fassa has for centuries been one of the liveliest centres of Ladin culture, a people of Rhaetian origin whose language, Fassan Ladin, is still spoken daily and taught in local schools. The village and its surroundings breathe this identity through traditional architecture, bilingual signage and folk events that mark the year. The church of Santa Giuliana, at the heart of the village, is one of the community's key religious and historical landmarks. The valley belongs to the Unione Generela di Ladins de Fascia, the body dedicated to preserving Ladin language and traditions.

Nature: Catinaccio and Ciampedie

The landscape around Vigo di Fassa is dominated by the rose-tinted spires of the Catinaccio (Rosengarten), one of the most photographed Dolomite massifs, famous for the enrosadira glow at sunset. The Ciampedie cable car rises from the village and in a few minutes reaches over 1,900 metres, onto a panoramic balcony facing the Dolomites and the starting point for numerous trails through spruce woods and high-altitude pastures. The whole area lies within the UNESCO Dolomites World Heritage site, recognised for its unique natural and scenic value.

What to do: skiing and hiking

In winter Vigo di Fassa is linked to the Catinaccio-Ciampedie ski area and forms part of the vast Dolomiti Superski network, with slopes for every level and connections to the other Ladin valleys. In summer the same area turns into a network of hiking trails, from easy family walks around Ciampedie to via ferratas and more demanding treks toward the Catinaccio mountain huts. There are also mountain bike routes, play areas for children and cross-country skiing in the winter months, making the resort suitable for every kind of active holiday.

Flavours and Ladin traditions

The cuisine of Vigo di Fassa is rooted in Ladin and Trentino tradition: canederli dumplings, polenta with porcini mushrooms, alpine-hut cheeses and speck accompany simpler dishes such as barley soup. In the farmsteads and mountain huts nearby, visitors can still buy locally made cheese, butter and honey. Throughout the year the village hosts markets, patronal feasts and events dedicated to Ladin folklore, with traditional costumes and folk music, precious occasions to get to know the valley's authentic identity up close.
