The story of Tonadico

Tonadico and the Primiero valley

Tonadico lies in the Primiero basin, a Trentino area enclosed by mountains that opens toward the eastern Dolomites. Today the village is part of the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, yet it keeps a recognisable identity in its compact old core and rural surroundings. Surrounded by meadows and woods, it is a reference point for travellers who want to experience Primiero at a slower pace, away from the busier resort centres, while still being minutes from San Martino di Castrozza and its ski slopes.

History of an ancient village

For centuries Tonadico was an independent municipality of Primiero, its history tied to the administration of the valley and to trade along the routes connecting to the Veneto region. The historic centre still holds noble palaces from different eras, evidence of the important role the village once played in the social and economic life of the area. Walking through the narrow streets, visitors come across frescoed facades and stone portals, traces of a past shaped by well-off families who had their residences here.

The Pale di San Martino and the surrounding nature

The landscape around Tonadico is dominated by the Pale di San Martino, a Dolomite massif recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose pale rock walls rise above forests of spruce and larch. Not far away opens the Val Canali, one of the most striking side valleys of Primiero, often praised for its wild beauty and the intimate atmosphere it offers to hikers and nature photographers. It is an environment rich in trails, streams and panoramic viewpoints, appealing in every season.

What to do: Castel Pietra, Villa Welsperg and trails

In the area toward Val Canali stands Castel Pietra, the ruins of a medieval castle perched on a rocky spur, reached by a short and evocative walk. A little further on is Villa Welsperg, a historic building that now houses the headquarters of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, with exhibitions on the valley's flora, fauna and traditions. From here numerous hiking trails set off, suitable for families and experienced walkers alike, leading to mountain huts, refuges and panoramic balconies overlooking the Pale.

Flavours and traditions of Primiero

Primiero's cuisine reflects mountain life, featuring alpine cheeses, canederli dumplings, polenta and game, often paired with locally made beers and spirits. Tonadico keeps alive some folk traditions linked to the farming calendar and to patron saint festivals, occasions when music, traditional costumes and local produce come together. Even a simple stop at a mountain hut or a village inn reveals the genuine hospitality that characterises the whole valley.
