Tesimo (Tisens) is a small municipality in South Tyrol set on a sunny hilltop plateau between Lana and Val d'Ultimo, not far from Merano. The municipal territory also includes the village of Prissiano (Prissian) and stands out for one of the highest concentrations of castles and noble residences in the entire province of Bolzano: among them Castel Zwingenberg, the Fahlburg and the manor of Katzenzungen, home to the Versoaln vine, considered one of the oldest and largest in Europe. The landscape is dominated by apple orchards, vineyards and chestnut groves stretching along the sunny slopes, evidence of a long agricultural tradition linked to the area's mild climate. From here wide views open onto Merano, the Adige Valley and, on clear days, the peaks of the Dolomites. A network of scenic trails and paths through vineyards and farmsteads links the various hamlets, making Tesimo a popular destination for walks and hikes in every season. Between history, nature and rural culture, the municipality is a well-preserved example of the South Tyrolean countryside, combining the charm of medieval manors with the quiet of a plateau still tied to the rhythms of the agricultural seasons.

The story

The story of Tesimo

A municipality on the plateau between Lana and Val d'Ultimo

Tesimo lies on a sunny plateau overlooking the Adige Valley, positioned between Lana and the entrance to Val d'Ultimo, a short distance from Merano. This sheltered, well-exposed location has favoured the development of high-quality agriculture over the centuries and the construction of numerous manor houses, today among the landscape's distinctive features. The municipality includes several hamlets and scattered farmsteads, linked by scenic roads winding through vineyards and woods. The moderate altitude and favourable climate make the plateau a point of balance between the warmer, busier valley floor and the cooler, wilder mountains of Val d'Ultimo. From here both Merano and the higher hiking areas are easily reached, making Tesimo a good base for exploring the whole area.

Castles and historic residences

The territory of Tesimo boasts one of the highest densities of castles and noble residences in all of South Tyrol. Among the most notable are Castel Zwingenberg, an imposing manor overlooking the plateau, and the Fahlburg, an elegant stately residence surrounded by vineyards. Particularly well known is Katzenzungen castle, whose garden is home to the Versoaln vine, considered one of the oldest and largest in Europe: a specimen that has produced grapes for centuries on an exceptionally large pergola. These residences, built mostly between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period, bear witness to the strategic and agricultural importance of the area, a crossroads between the Adige Valley and the side valleys. Many remain private property, but they stay clearly visible from the trails crossing the plateau, contributing decisively to the charm of the landscape.

Prissiano and the villages of the area

The municipality of Tesimo also includes the village of Prissiano (Prissian), set lower down the slope descending towards the Adige Valley. Prissiano preserves a compact historic centre, with traditional houses and small courtyards surrounded by terraced vineyards, and together with the main village of Tesimo forms one of the two main hubs of the municipal territory. The settlement's distribution across several hamlets, typical of this part of South Tyrol, reflects the area's historic agricultural organisation, made up of isolated farmsteads and small villages linked by mule tracks later turned into roads. Walking between Tesimo and Prissiano reveals this settlement pattern up close, alternating views of vineyards, historic residences and farmhouses still inhabited and cultivated today.

Apple orchards, vineyards and chestnut groves

The agricultural economy of Tesimo rests on three main crops that shape the plateau's landscape: apple orchards, occupying the more regular and better-exposed strips of land, vineyards, often grown on pergolas according to South Tyrolean tradition, and chestnut groves, found mainly at the edges bordering the woodland. This combination of crops, the result of centuries of adaptation to the local microclimate, gives the area a variety of landscapes that changes visibly with the seasons: from the spring blossom of the apple trees to the deep green of summer, through to the autumn colours of vines and chestnuts. Proximity to Merano has historically favoured the marketing of produce, while chestnuts remain tied to a more local and seasonal consumption, often the centrepiece of traditional autumn festivals held throughout the area.

Mild climate, trails and walks

The mild climate of the Tesimo plateau, favoured by its sunny exposure and the shelter of the surrounding mountains, makes the area pleasant to explore in every season of the year. A dense network of scenic trails links farmsteads, castles and villages, offering walks of varying length and difficulty through vineyards, orchards and deciduous woods. Many routes offer open views over Merano and the Adige Valley, and on clearer days the eye can reach as far as the peaks of the Dolomites, clearly visible on the horizon. For those seeking more demanding walks, the plateau also serves as a gateway to the trails of Val d'Ultimo, where the landscape gradually becomes more mountainous. The combination of a favourable climate, well-tended agricultural landscape and wide views makes Tesimo a popular destination for hiking tourism in every season.
