The story

The story of Taio

A village in the heart of Val di Non

Taio lies in the Val di Non, one of the largest valleys in Trentino, world-renowned for apple growing. The village is now the seat of the municipality of Predaia, formed by merging several localities of the plateau of the same name. Set on a sunny slope, Taio enjoys a panorama sweeping over the surrounding orchards and the ridges enclosing the valley, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the whole Anaunia area.

History and origins of the village

Taio's origins are rooted in the long history of settlement in the Val di Non, shaped over the centuries by mountain agriculture and the organization into small, self-governing rural communities. Like many villages in the valley, Taio kept its own identity of churches, farming courtyards and compact hamlets, before becoming part of the wider municipality of Predaia, established to unite the strength of the plateau's different villages and jointly enhance the territory.

Nature and the Predaia plateau

Taio's territory extends up to the Predaia plateau, an environment of woods, meadows and small mountain lakes valued for its mild climate and varied landscapes. Descending toward the valley floor, the scenery changes dramatically: orderly rows of apple orchards shape the hillsides, a distinctive feature of the whole Val di Non. This contrast between the wooded plateau and the cultivated valley floor makes the area especially interesting from a natural and scenic point of view.

What to do in Taio

Visitors staying in Taio can walk trails and dirt roads through orchards in blossom in spring or laden with fruit in autumn, or head up into the Predaia woods for more demanding hikes. The village is also a good base for cycling routes along the valley and for visits to local farms, where you can see up close the growing and harvesting of the apple, the territory's signature product.

Flavors and Anaunia traditions

Taio's cuisine reflects the agricultural vocation of the valley: the Val di Non PDO apple stars in desserts, juices and spirits, but the local table also offers alpine cheeses, cured meats, mushrooms and traditional Trentino farmhouse dishes. Village festivals and seasonal markets are the best chance to taste these products straight from the producers and discover the slow pace of Anaunia rural life, still very much alive throughout the Predaia community.
