The story of Sfruz
A sunny terrace over Val di Non
Sfruz occupies a fortunate position on the eastern side of Val di Non, in Trentino-Alto Adige, on a sun-drenched plateau overlooking the valley below. The small settlement is surrounded by cultivated fields and woods that climb towards the Predaia plateau, in a still very authentic rural setting. Its proximity to Smarano, Coredo and Taio makes Sfruz a convenient base for exploring the wider area, while keeping the quiet charm of an uncrowded mountain village.
History and origins of the village
Like many settlements in Val di Non, Sfruz has its roots in a mountain rural economy, tied for centuries to farming, livestock and the use of the surrounding woods. The small village core grew in a compact form around the parish church, following the typical layout of Trentino hillside villages. Over the course of the 20th century the local economy gradually shifted towards fruit growing, in particular apple cultivation, which reshaped the agricultural landscape while keeping the village's tight-knit character intact.
Nature among apple orchards, larch woods and the Predaia plateau
The Sfruz countryside is marked by the contrast between the neat apple orchards covering the lower slopes and the larch and conifer woods climbing towards the Predaia plateau. This large wooded area, shared with neighbouring municipalities, is characterised by shaded trails, clearings and a cool microclimate even in high summer. In spring the apple blossom turns the fields around the village white and pink, while in autumn the larches take on golden hues that accompany the apple harvest.
What to do: walks and hikes
Sfruz is an excellent starting point for those who enjoy unhurried walks through the local orchards and woods. Trails and farm tracks branch out from the village, linking it to neighbouring hamlets and leading up towards the Predaia plateau, suitable for both short strolls and longer hikes through meadows and conifer woods. The valley floor of Val di Non, with its towns and lakes, is easily reached, while those seeking wider views can head further up along the trails crossing the highland woods, amid silence and fresh mountain air.
Flavours and traditions: the apple of Val di Non
The cuisine and traditions of Sfruz reflect the agricultural vocation of Val di Non, where the apple is the undisputed star. The orchards surrounding the village are part of one of Europe's most important fruit-growing areas, and apple-based products, from juices to cakes and strudel, appear on local tables in countless variations. Alongside the fruit, Trentino mountain cuisine offers simple, hearty dishes based on cheese, cured meats, polenta and forest produce, perfect after a day spent among trails and orchards.
