A Ladin municipality born from Pozza and Vigo di Fassa
San Giovanni di Fassa is a municipality created on 1 January 2018 through the merger of Pozza di Fassa and Vigo di Fassa, two of the best-known villages in the Val di Fassa, Trentino. Pozza di Fassa, set along the valley floor beside the Avisio torrent, is known for its thermal spa and for being a lively summer and winter tourist hub. Vigo di Fassa, the valley's historic main town, preserves a characteristic centre with traditional Fassa buildings and has always been the valley's principal cultural and administrative pole. The merger created a stronger, more cohesive municipality, able to jointly showcase the natural, cultural and tourist heritage of the entire Val di Fassa, while keeping alive the distinct identity of each of the two original hamlets, with their churches, squares and local traditions.
The Catinaccio/Rosengarten and the Vajolet Towers
The territory of San Giovanni di Fassa is dominated by the Catinaccio massif, known in German as Rosengarten, one of the most famous and photographed Dolomite groups, included since 2009 in the UNESCO Natural World Heritage site "Dolomites". Its vertical walls culminate in the famous Vajolet Towers, three rock spires that for over a century have attracted climbers and mountaineering enthusiasts from around the world, reachable via high-mountain trails and hikes starting from the area's mountain huts. The legend of King Laurin and the enrosadira
The name Rosengarten, rose garden, comes from the famous legend of King Laurin, ruler of the dwarves, who according to Ladin popular tradition owned a wonderful rose garden at the foot of the Catinaccio. When the garden was discovered and destroyed by his enemies, Laurin cursed it so that no one could ever see it again, neither by day nor by night: he forgot, however, dawn and dusk, the moments in which, still today, the Catinaccio walls turn pink and deep red, a phenomenon known as enrosadira. This natural spectacle, which repeats every evening at sunset under favourable sky conditions, is one of the most evocative experiences to be had in San Giovanni di Fassa, visible from numerous panoramic points in the village and from the trails climbing towards the massif.
Ladin culture and language: the Museo Ladino di Fassa
San Giovanni di Fassa is one of the most significant centres of Dolomite Ladin culture, home to an ancient language spoken in the Ladin valleys for centuries and still alive today in daily life, schools and local signage.
