The story

The story of San Cassiano

Introduction and location in the Alta Badia

San Cassiano sits at roughly 1,535 metres in the southern part of Val Badia, within the municipality of Badia, in the province of Bolzano. It is one of the most elegant villages of the Alta Badia, the Dolomite plateau that also includes Corvara, Colfosco and La Villa. Its secluded setting at the foot of the Sasso della Croce, just minutes from the Valparola Pass, makes it an ideal base year-round for exploring the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

History and Ladin culture

San Cassiano lies within Val Badia, one of the Dolomites' Ladin valleys where the ancient Rhaeto-Romance Ladin language is still spoken today alongside Italian and German. The local community keeps traditions, religious festivals and a strong sense of identity alive, tied to Dolomite legends such as that of the Fanes people, connected to the very plateau overlooking the area. Small churches, traditional farmhouses and Tyrolean architecture tell the story of a mountain community that has balanced international tourism with its cultural roots.

Nature: the Dolomites, Fanes-Sennes-Braies and Sasso della Croce

San Cassiano is surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the Dolomites. To the north lies the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, a vast karst plateau with alpine lakes, pastures and rock walls that is home to chamois and golden eagles. To the south rises the imposing Sasso della Croce, known in Ladin as Sas dla Crusc, a massif whose spires define the village skyline. This protected natural setting offers unique views in every season, from spruce forests to high-altitude meadows, drawing naturalists and photographers alike.

Things to do: skiing, hiking and gastronomy

In winter San Cassiano is linked to the Alta Badia ski area, part of the Dolomiti Superski network, with well-groomed slopes connected directly to the famous Sella Ronda circuit. In summer the lifts open for hikers and mountain bikers, with trails leading into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies plateau and to the Scotoni mountain hut. Food lovers find an exceptional concentration of top-tier restaurants here, some Michelin-starred, blending Ladin tradition with contemporary haute cuisine, making San Cassiano an internationally renowned gourmet destination.

Flavours and Ladin traditions

San Cassiano's cuisine is rooted in Ladin and Tyrolean tradition: canederli dumplings, casunziei ravioli, barley risotto and polenta served with alpine cheeses are staples in the mountain huts and lodges. Alongside the starred restaurants, traditional wood-panelled stube survive, serving simple, genuine dishes often made from produce sourced from nearby mountain pastures. Seasonal markets and festivals offer a chance to discover local crafts, from textiles to wood carvings, living testimony to the Ladin culture of Val Badia.
