Ronchi Valsugana lies on the northern slope of the lower Valsugana, facing south above the course of the Brenta river, not far from Torcegno, Roncegno Terme and Borgo Valsugana. It is one of the smallest municipalities in Trentino, a compact cluster of houses and scattered mountain farmsteads amid sloping meadows, with views over the valley below and the Lagorai peaks closing the horizon to the north. Its position away from the main tourist routes has preserved the rural character and quiet typical of Trentino's mountain villages.
History and origins
Like many villages of the lower Valsugana, Ronchi Valsugana takes its name from the "ronchi", land laboriously cleared and made arable on the hillsides, evidence of an ancient agricultural and forest-pastoral economy. For centuries community life revolved around the mountain farmsteads, small terraced plots and the exploitation of the surrounding woods, in close connection with the Lagorai territory. The local history is intertwined with that of the neighbouring Valsugana municipalities, sharing administrative and ecclesiastical events over the centuries.

The municipal territory stretches from the sunny meadows around the village to the chestnut woods and the higher elevations at the foot of the Lagorai, the long mountain chain that separates the Valsugana from Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa. The landscape alternates cultivated clearings, hedgerows and tree lines with denser wooded belts, in a mosaic typical of Trentino's mid-altitude mountains.
