The story of Proves
A village suspended above the Alta Val di Non
Proves sits on a natural balcony of the Deutschnonsberg, the German-speaking plateau overlooking the Alta Val di Non, on the border between the province of Bolzano and Trentino. The village, among the smallest and highest in South Tyrol, is surrounded by isolated mountain farms linked by winding mountain roads that offer wide views over the valleys and surrounding ranges. Its secluded position has allowed the village to keep a slow pace of life, still tied to the cycles of mountain farming and animal husbandry.
History and linguistic identity of the Nonsberg
Proves belongs to the Deutschnonsberg, the German-speaking enclave that stands apart from the rest of the Val di Non, mostly Italian-speaking and part of Trentino. Its roots go back to the medieval settlement of the plateau by German-speaking populations, who brought customs, dialect and traditions still alive today in place names, surnames and daily life. Over time the village has kept a strong sense of community, typical of small mountain settlements where the German language coexists with cultural closeness to the Trentino world.
Nature and high-altitude landscape
The municipal territory stretches across mown meadows, sloping pastures and coniferous woods climbing toward the higher elevations of the Nonsberg. The altitude and sunny exposure create a distinctive microclimate, with cold winters and cool, bright summers ideal for outdoor life. The landscape is dotted with traditional wood-and-stone mountain farms, evidence of a still-active rural economy, and with clearings offering panoramic views over the Dolomites and the surrounding valleys.
Hiking and outdoor activities
Proves is an excellent starting point for walks and hikes across the Deutschnonsberg plateau, with trails connecting mountain farms, pastures and woods toward the neighbouring villages. In summer the paths offer relaxing walks through flowering meadows as well as more demanding stretches toward higher elevations, while in winter the snow-covered landscape is perfect for snowshoeing and quiet walks far from traffic. The network of forest roads and mule tracks also appeals to mountain bikers and families out for a day trip.
Flavours and rural traditions
The cuisine of Proves reflects the South Tyrolean mountain farming tradition: dairy products and cheeses from the mountain farms, high-altitude garden produce such as potatoes, typical of the Nonsberg, and simple dishes based on rye bread, speck and canederli, common throughout German-speaking South Tyrol. Village life still follows the agricultural calendar, with summer haymaking and livestock care as central activities, keeping alive customs and knowledge handed down from generation to generation across the scattered mountain farms.
