Predazzo is one of the most important centres of Val di Fiemme, in Trentino, located at the point where the valley meets Val di Fassa, at the foot of the Latemar and not far from the Pale di San Martino. The village combines a solid tourist vocation, rooted in the tradition of cross-country skiing and ski jumping, with a natural and geological heritage of international standing, recognised by UNESCO through the Dolomites system. Predazzo is known as something of a capital of Dolomites geology, because volcanic rocks and dolomitic rocks meet within its territory in a setting studied by generations of geologists, and it is home to the Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti, a reference point for scientific outreach on the area. It is also a historic capital of Nordic skiing: the ski jump and Nordic combined stadiums have hosted the Val di Fiemme Nordic Ski World Championships, drawing athletes and enthusiasts from all over the world. There is no shortage of Alpine ski slopes either, linked to the Latemar-Obereggen-Pampeago ski area, along with a dense network of trails that in summer lead towards forests, mountain huts and dolomitic rock faces. Predazzo is therefore a destination that brings together sport, science and nature in a single alpine landscape.

The story

The story of Predazzo

Predazzo, the heart of Val di Fiemme between the Latemar and the Pale di San Martino

Predazzo lies at the point where Val di Fiemme widens and meets Val di Fassa, a strategic position that has long made it a crossroads of people, goods and alpine cultures. The village is dominated to the north by the walls of the Latemar, a dolomitic group with an unmistakable profile, while to the south-east the view opens onto the Pale di San Martino, one of the largest massifs of the Dolomites. This central position makes Predazzo a natural starting point for exploring the whole of Val di Fiemme and the neighbouring valleys, from Val di Fassa to Passo Rolle. The historic centre, with its traditional houses and lively village life, coexists with the sporting and tourist spirit that over the years has made Predazzo a name known well beyond the borders of Trentino.

A unique geology: the geological garden and the Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti

Predazzo owes part of its scientific fame to an unusual geology: here rocks of volcanic origin, dating back to intense magmatic activity tens of millions of years ago, lie side by side with dolomitic sedimentary rocks, giving rise to a true geological garden studied by naturalists since the nineteenth century. This encounter between different geological worlds has made the Predazzo area an open-air laboratory for the study of the Dolomites, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This story is told at the Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti, which displays minerals, fossils and rocks from the area and guides visitors through the formation of the mountains surrounding Val di Fiemme, making a scientific heritage of international value accessible to everyone.

Nordic skiing, the ski jumps and the Val di Fiemme World Championships

Predazzo is one of the historic capitals of Italian and international Nordic skiing. The village hosts the Stadio del salto facilities, with the ski jumps used for ski jumping and Nordic combined competitions, disciplines that have a long competitive tradition here. These facilities, together with those in Lago di Tesero, have allowed Val di Fiemme to host several editions of the Nordic Ski World Championships, events that brought athletes, technicians and enthusiasts from all over the world to Predazzo, consolidating its international reputation. Even today the sports facilities are active during the winter season, hosting training sessions, races and events that make Predazzo a reference point for anyone who practises or follows Nordic skiing, from cross-country to ski jumping and Nordic combined.

Alpine skiing: the Latemar-Obereggen and Pampeago ski area

In addition to Nordic skiing, Predazzo is also a gateway to Alpine skiing in Val di Fiemme. Nearby lies the Ski Center Latemar area, which links the Obereggen and Pampeago ski facilities into a single large skiing domain at the foot of the Latemar massif, appreciated for its well-exposed slopes and views over the surrounding Dolomites. Skiers can choose among runs suited to different levels, family areas and connections to the other ski areas nearby, in a setting that combines Alpine skiing, modern lift facilities and dolomitic scenery. Its proximity to Predazzo makes it convenient to stay in the village and quickly reach the lifts, alternating days on the snow with visits to the historic centre and its services.

Hiking and nature among forests, mountain huts and dolomitic walls

In the warmer months Predazzo becomes an ideal base for hikes of every level, from the easiest trails through the spruce and larch woods surrounding the village to more demanding routes towards the walls of the Latemar and the Pale di San Martino. The hiking network of Val di Fiemme links mountain huts, refuges and panoramic viewpoints, offering the chance to alternate high-altitude walks with stops to try local dairy products. Nature lovers can observe alpine flora and fauna up close, while geology enthusiasts find further evidence of the area's volcanic and sedimentary past along the trails. In summer as in autumn, when the woods turn to intense colours, Predazzo remains a privileged starting point for experiencing the Dolomites on foot, away from the crowds of the more touristic destinations.
