Introduction and geographical position
Ponte Gardena lies in the southern stretch of the Isarco valley, exactly where the Gardena stream flows into the Isarco river, marking the natural entrance to Val Gardena. Despite its small municipal area, the village occupies a strategic crossroads position, historically crossed by travellers heading up the valley toward the Dolomites of Val Gardena or continuing along the main valley floor. History: from the castle to the Brenner route
The history of Ponte Gardena is inseparable from Trostburg castle, the imposing fortress that dominates the village from a rocky spur above. One of South Tyrol's largest castles, it was long the residence of prominent noble families and today houses a museum devoted to the region's castle culture. The village grew precisely because of its position along the historic Brenner route, the ancient thoroughfare linking northern Europe to Italy, which encouraged trade, travel and the rise of a small waystation settlement at the foot of the fortress.
Nature and landscape
