Mezzana, the heart of Val di Sole
Mezzana is a municipality in Val di Sole, in the province of Trento, lying along the banks of the Noce river in a basin surrounded by conifer forests and peaks rising above three thousand metres. The village retains the typical layout of Trentino's alpine settlements, with stone and timber houses, small squares and a pace of life tied to the seasons. Thanks to its position, Mezzana is a reference point for visitors to Val di Sole: from here it is easy to reach both the valley floor, with its services and connections, and the higher elevations towards the ski lifts. Its closeness to the Noce river makes the village a natural crossing point between valley life and the mountains, while the atmosphere remains that of a community living from mountain tourism in every season, between winter skiing and summer devoted to hiking and water sports.
Skiing at Marilleva and the link to Madonna di Campiglio
Mezzana is one of the gateways to the Folgarida-Marilleva Ski Area, the ski resort that develops from the hamlet of Marilleva, a well-known high-altitude resort with slopes running down through the woods and wide sun-exposed areas. The lift system connects Folgarida and Marilleva to the famous Madonna di Campiglio, becoming part of the wider Skirama Dolomiti di Brenta ski network, one of the best-known ski systems in the Italian Alps. This means that, with a single ski pass, from the lifts above Mezzana it is possible to reach slopes with different exposures and difficulty levels, alternating panoramic stretches overlooking the Brenta Dolomites with more technical descents. In winter, the village therefore becomes a convenient base for skiing, with the option of returning to the valley in a day after skiing across several connected areas.
The Noce river and rafting
The Noce river runs through Val di Sole past Mezzana and is one of the valley's defining features. Fed by the glaciers and snows of the Adamello-Presanella and Brenta Dolomites, its waters are often fast-flowing, with rapids that have made the Noce one of Italy's best-known rivers for whitewater sports. In the warmer months the valley comes alive with rafting, hydrospeed and canoe-kayak enthusiasts, who paddle the most suitable stretches accompanied by experienced guides. The Noce's rapids, graded across several difficulty levels, attract both first-timers and more trained athletes looking for demanding routes. Even for those who do not practise water sports, the river remains a central landscape feature, followed by trails and cycle paths that allow its course to be admired closely along the whole valley.
The Adamello-Brenta Nature Park
On the edge of Mezzana lies the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, Trentino's largest protected area and one of the most significant in the central Alps. The park includes two very different mountain groups, the granite Adamello-Presanella and the dolomitic Brenta, bringing together glacial environments, conifer forests, alpine lakes and sheer rock faces. It is also known as the area where the brown bear population reintroduced in Trentino lives, alongside deer, roe deer and numerous alpine bird species. Inside the park a dense network of marked trails, refuges and bivouacs allows for hikes of every level, from woodland walks to more demanding climbs towards the Brenta peaks. For those staying in Mezzana, the park is therefore one of the closest nature destinations for days devoted to trekking and wildlife watching.
Railway, cycle path and hiking
Mezzana is served by the historic Trento-Malé railway, which climbs Val di Sole connecting the valley floor with Trento and making it possible to reach the village without a car. Running along the valley is also the Val di Sole cycle path, a mostly flat route that follows the course of the Noce river through meadows, woods and small settlements, much used by families and cycle tourists in every season. Numerous hiking trails also start from the village, climbing towards the surrounding woods and mountain pastures, offering panoramic points over the valley and the peaks that enclose it. Between train, bicycle and walking, Mezzana therefore lends itself to a visit that favours gentle mobility, allowing valley stretches, rides along the Noce and hikes to higher elevations to be combined without necessarily relying on a car.
