Marebbe and San Vigilio: the Ladin heart of Val Badia
The municipality of Marebbe lies in Val Badia, one of the Ladin valleys of South Tyrol, and includes several hamlets, among them the main village San Vigilio di Marebbe (San Vídl), Pieve di Marebbe and Rina. San Vigilio is the tourist hub of the municipality, with hotels, traditional restaurants and shops set within a compact, well-kept village core surrounded by forests and Dolomite walls. Its position, halfway between the valley floor of Val Badia and the higher altitudes of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, makes Marebbe an ideal starting point both for those seeking active holidays and for those who simply want to enjoy the alpine scenery. The village has managed to preserve an authentic identity, linked to farming and pastoral traditions, while developing over the years a modern and diversified tourist offer, ranging from winter skiing to summer hiking, along with wellness and local gastronomy.
The Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park
A large part of Marebbe's territory falls within the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, one of the largest nature parks in South Tyrol and part of the UNESCO Dolomites site. The park preserves karst plateaus, coniferous forests, peat bogs and vertical rock faces rising above two thousand metres, creating a landscape of remarkable variety. Within it lies the Fanes alp, a vast grassy plateau surrounded by Dolomite peaks, historically used for summer cattle grazing and today a favourite destination for hikers and nature lovers. The park is also home to alpine lakes of great charm, marked trails for every level of difficulty, and mountain huts that allow a day trip to be turned into a multi-day trek. Its wildlife, which includes chamois, marmots and numerous birds of prey, together with alpine flora rich in endemic species, make the park a protected natural laboratory, managed with the aim of reconciling environmental protection and sustainable tourism.
Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) and skiing
Marebbe is directly connected to the Plan de Corones ski area, known in German as Kronplatz, one of the most famous and popular mountains in the entire Alpine arc. The summit, which rises above two thousand metres, offers wide, well-groomed slopes suitable for both expert skiers and families, along with a modern lift system linking Marebbe with the nearby resorts of Brunico, San Vigilio, Valdaora and Perca. On top of the Kronplatz also stands the Messner Mountain Museum Corones, a museum dedicated to mountaineering designed by star architect Zaha Hadid and commissioned by mountaineer Reinhold Messner, built into the rock and offering spectacular views over the Dolomites. In winter the ski area attracts skiers from all over Europe thanks to guaranteed snow cover and the quality of its slopes; in summer the same lifts provide easy access to panoramic hikes, mountain bike trails and high-altitude walks, making the Kronplatz a year-round tourist destination.
Ladin culture and language: the legend of the Fanes
Marebbe belongs to the Ladin valleys of South Tyrol and maintains a strong bond with the Ladin language and culture, recognised as a historic linguistic minority. In schools, on signage and in everyday life, Ladin coexists with Italian and German, testifying to a multilingual identity rooted over the centuries. One of the best-known expressions of this culture is the legend of the Kingdom of Fanes, a cycle of tales narrating an ancient people, a princess, alliances with marmots and a lost kingdom among the mountains that today bear its name. This legend, handed down orally for generations, is now told and celebrated at the Museum Ladin Ćiastel de Tor, located in San Martino in Badia, which displays artefacts, reconstructions and multimedia materials dedicated to the history, language and traditions of the Ladin peoples of Val Badia and Val Gardena. A visit to the museum offers a valuable opportunity to understand Marebbe's cultural roots beyond its tourist dimension.
Summer hiking and nature
In summer Marebbe becomes one of the preferred starting points for hiking in the Dolomites. Trails leaving the village climb towards the Fanes alp, towards high-altitude mountain huts and towards alpine lakes nestled among rock walls, suitable both for day trips and as stages of multi-day treks through the Fanes and Sennes groups. The paths are well marked and suited to different levels of fitness, ranging from family-friendly high-altitude walks to more demanding routes for experienced hikers and enthusiasts of summer ski touring or climbing. Spruce and larch forests, still-active alpine huts producing cheese and dairy products, flowering meadows and glacier-fed streams complete a landscape that changes colour with the seasons. Many refuges offer food and overnight stays, allowing visitors to experience the high mountains at a relaxed pace, while panoramic viewpoints along the trails offer views of the Dolomite peaks that have made this part of South Tyrol famous throughout the world.
