The story

The story of Malosco

A sunny balcony over the Anaunia

Malosco lies in the upper Val di Non, on the slope facing Fondo and the Anaunia basin, a short distance from the Palade Pass marking the border with South Tyrol. Since 2020 the village has been part of the municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia, formed by the merger with Fondo and Castelfondo. Its elevated, open position offers wide views over the surrounding mountains and a cool climate even in high summer, which has long made it a favourite place for rest and holidays.

History and Malosco Castle

The village's historic symbol is Malosco Castle, a fortress of medieval origin that dominates the settlement from a wooded rise. Like many castles of the Anaunia, it preserves the history of local lords and the ancient jurisdictions of the valley. The centre keeps the compact layout of mountain villages, with stone houses, portals and traditional courtyards. All around, the farmsteads and meadows tell of a long farming and forestry vocation, now joined by the tourist tradition.

Woods, orchards and views

The setting around Malosco alternates the conifer woods of the upper valley with the apple orchards that produce the famous Val di Non apple. Trails climb towards the pastures and ridges dividing Trentino from South Tyrol, in the direction of the Palade Pass, while the view sweeps over the Fondo basin and the peaks of the Anaunia. It is a tidy, bright landscape, ideal for quiet walks, fresh air and long days outdoors among nature and orchards.

Things to do in Malosco

Malosco is an ideal base for a relaxing holiday in the upper Val di Non. You can explore the village and admire its castle, follow the trails crossing woods and orchards, or reach nearby Fondo with its Rio Sass canyon and Emerald Lake. The plateau lends itself to walks, hikes and cycling in summer, while the peaceful atmosphere and open views make it a destination appreciated by families and by those seeking quiet and cool mountain air.

Flavours and traditions

Malosco's cuisine reflects the rural tradition of the Val di Non, where the PDO apple reigns, starring in cakes, juices and local dishes. There is no shortage of mountain-hut cheeses, cured meats, game and forest products such as mushrooms and berries. Village fairs and festivals mark summer and autumn, moments when the community celebrates the harvest and the old Anaunia customs, amid genuine flavours and mountain hospitality.
