Croviana is a small municipality in the Val di Sole, in Trentino, stretched along the Noce stream a few kilometres from Malé, the valley's main town. The village comprises three hamlets, Carbonara toward the valley floor, Liciasa toward Monclassico, and the centre of Croviana, surrounded by apple orchards and fruit groves that testify to the area's agricultural vocation. The settlement's origins date back at least to the 13th century, when the place name first appears in documents, probably derived from the Latin Corvius, though earlier traces, from Roman and prehistoric times, have been found in the area. Today Croviana is known above all for MMape, the Mulino Museo dell'Ape, a mill-museum devoted to bees, offering a sensory journey through the world of bees and alpine beekeeping that supports the valley's network of beekeepers. The village also preserves a notable historical and architectural heritage, with the Gothic church of San Giorgio and its seventeenth-century frescoes, and the old residence of the Pezzen family, with baroque portals and a frescoed chapel. The municipality is crossed by the Val di Sole cycle path and looks onto the Noce, a stream loved by rafting and canoeing enthusiasts, in a setting that blends history, craftsmanship and rural landscape.

The story

The story of Croviana

Croviana in the Val di Sole, along the Noce

Croviana lies in the lower Val di Sole, the valley carved by the Noce stream as it flows down from the Ortles-Cevedale range toward the Val di Non and the Adige plain. The municipality, covering around five square kilometres, borders Malé, the valley's main town, as well as Monclassico, Dimaro Folgarida, Cles and Presson, in a territory set between the first slopes of the Maddalene range and the opposite slopes rising toward the Val di Rabbi. The settlement is made up of three hamlets: Carbonara, closer to the valley floor, Liciasa, toward Monclassico, and the centre of Croviana, toward Malé. Apple orchards and fruit groves occupy much of the valley floor, while woods and meadows dot the slopes, in a farming landscape typical of the lower Val di Sole, a gateway to the Noce valleys for those arriving from the Val di Non.

MMape, the World of Bees in the Croviana Mill

Croviana's flagship attraction is MMape, the Mulino Museo dell'Ape, set up in an old water mill in the heart of the village and opened in 2015. The museum offers a sensory itinerary that lets visitors observe bees up close, understand their behaviour and communication, follow the development of larvae and taste hive products, combining education with hands-on experience. Around the museum revolves a dense network of beekeepers from the Val di Sole and neighbouring valleys, including the Val di Non, where MMape also runs a historic apiary in Sfruz: a project that supports dozens of small local producers and promotes the biodiversity linked to mountain beekeeping. Activities on offer include meetings with beekeepers, workshops on solitary bees, and a 'beekeeper for a day' experience, designed for families, schools and organised groups.

Historical Heritage: Palazzo Pezzen and the Churches

Croviana preserves an architectural heritage that tells centuries of rural and noble history. The church of San Giorgio, with its Gothic layout dating from the late fifteenth to early sixteenth century, houses frescoes from 1611 inside, evidence of the valley's lively tradition of devotional painting. Not far away stands the old residence of the Pezzen family, a seventeenth-century noble building locally known as Palazzo Pezzen, recognisable for its baroque portals and tower-like elements that mark its profile. Next to the residence stands the family chapel, which preserves a painting dated 1661 depicting the Madonna with musician angels. In the historic centre, notable civil buildings can also be seen, such as Casa Sartori, with Gothic portals and Renaissance details from the sixteenth century, and Casa de Angeli, with its period stonework, together forming a built fabric that has kept its alpine character intact.

The Noce, the Cycle Path and Nature

The Noce stream marks the natural boundary of Croviana's territory and has always defined its identity: its waters, fed by the glaciers of the Ortles-Cevedale and the Adamello-Presanella group, are among the most prized in Europe by rafting, hydrospeed and canoeing enthusiasts, so much so that the Val di Sole hosted the world canoe and kayak championships in 1993. Running along the valley floor is the Ciclopista della Val di Sole, one of Trentino's most popular cycle-touring routes, linking Croviana to nearby towns along a flat path immersed among apple orchards, fruit groves and woods. The banks of the Noce and the trails climbing toward the slopes offer walks of every level, from riverside strolls to more demanding hikes toward higher altitudes, in a natural setting that alternates farmland with unspoiled mountain scenery.

History and Experiences between Past and Present

The earliest traces of human presence in Croviana's territory date back to prehistoric and Roman times, but it is from the 13th century onward that the place name appears consistently in documents, marking the beginning of the settlement's history as we know it today. For centuries the local economy remained tied to mountain farming, livestock and the use of the Noce's waters, which powered mills such as the one now home to MMape. During the First World War the village was also drawn into events on the front, with an Austrian airfield built on wooden platforms near the settlement. Today Croviana combines this historical legacy with a varied tourist offer, including visits to the bee museum, walks among the apple orchards in spring bloom, hikes along the Noce and stops to discover the small but dense artistic heritage of the historic centre, striking a balance between farming tradition and experiences designed for slow, mindful tourism.
