The origins of Torrita di Siena date back to the Middle Ages, when the village developed as a fortified settlement along the southern borders of the Republic of Siena, in a strategic position for controlling the Val di Chiana. The town's very name recalls the presence of a defensive tower, a central element of the fortification system that protected the settlement. After the fall of the Sienese Republic in 1555, the territory passed under the Medici Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Today the urban fabric still preserves traces of that era, with narrow streets, stone buildings and remnants of the old walls that tell a story of defence and resilience.
