San Quirico d'Orcia stands on a low hill in the southern part of the province of Siena, within the Val d'Orcia, one of Tuscany's most celebrated valleys for the harmony of its agricultural landscape. The town lies along the historic route of the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage road linking northern Europe to Rome, a fact that has deeply shaped its history and layout. From here other towns in the valley, such as Pienza and Montalcino, are easily reached, across a territory dominated by gentle hills, rows of cypress trees and clay hillsides that change colour with the seasons.
History and origins
The origins of San Quirico d'Orcia date back to Roman times, though the town developed mainly during the Middle Ages thanks to its position along the Via Francigena, which made it an important stopping point for pilgrims, merchants and armies. Over the centuries the settlement was contested between Siena and other regional powers, and it is remembered for a stay by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in the twelfth century, an episode still celebrated by the local community today. The medieval walls, largely still standing, together with the urban layout gathered around the main streets, bear witness to this past as a strategic crossroads between the north and south of the peninsula.

The countryside around San Quirico d'Orcia forms an integral part of the Val d'Orcia, inscribed in 2004 on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the outstanding value of its rural landscape. Among its main sights are the Collegiate Church of Saints Quiricus and Giulitta, a Romanesque building known for its carved portals, the Horti Leonini, a Renaissance Italian garden open to the public, and Palazzo Chigi, a historic noble residence. In the hamlet of Bagno Vignoni, part of the municipality, stands the distinctive square with a thermal pool in place of ordinary paving, one of the most photographed spots in the Val d'Orcia. The area is also a reference point for those walking or cycling the Via Francigena.
Flavours and traditions
The cuisine of San Quirico d'Orcia reflects the rural traditions of the Val d'Orcia, built around simple, genuine products such as pecorino cheese, honey, extra virgin olive oil and wines from the Orcia DOC appellation. Restaurants and small shops in town serve handmade pici pasta, local cured meats and legume-based dishes, often paired with a glass of local red wine. Each year the community re-enacts Emperor Frederick Barbarossa's historic stay with the Festa del Barbarossa, a costumed historical event that fills the streets with processions, markets and performances, keeping alive the town's bond with its medieval past.
