Introduction and location
Roccalbegna lies in the province of Grosseto, in the inland Tuscan Maremma, along the valley carved out by the Albegna river. The village stands perched on a rocky spur, from which its own name derives, in a dominant position over the valley below. It is a land of hills and slopes running down toward Monte Amiata, in an area still largely untouched by mass tourism. History and origins
Roccalbegna's origins go back to the Middle Ages, when the territory belonged to the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, lords of much of southern Maremma. The village's own name recalls its nature as a fortified rock, built for defence on a natural height controlling the Albegna valley. In later centuries the area came under the influence of Siena and, subsequently, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, following the historical path common to many villages of the inland Maremma. The urban fabric still preserves its medieval layout today, with stone houses huddled together along steep, narrow lanes.
Nature and landscape
The landscape around Roccalbegna is shaped by wooded hills, pastures and narrow valleys, typical of the inner Grosseto Maremma. The nearby Monte Amiata brings chestnut and beech woods that turn vivid colours in autumn, while the Albegna river flows past the village between green banks.
