Introduction and Location
Poggibonsi lies in the province of Siena, Tuscany, at the meeting point of the Elsa Valley and the northern edge of the Chianti hills. Its position halfway between Florence and Siena made it, for centuries, an obligatory stop along the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrim route linking northern Europe to Rome. Today the town is an active center spanning plain and hillside, surrounded by countryside planted with vines and olive trees, while the Elsa River flows nearby, marking the valley's natural boundary. San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence are all within easy reach.
History and Origins
Poggibonsi's origins trace back to the Middle Ages, when the settlement, then known as Poggio Bonizio, developed as a strategic stronghold fought over by Florence and Siena for control of the Elsa Valley. In the 16th century, Cosimo I de' Medici commissioned the Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale on the hilltop, an imposing defensive structure that still overlooks the town. The city paid a heavy price during the Second World War, when 1944 bombings destroyed much of the historic center, later rebuilt in the postwar years. This layered past explains the modern face of many streets, alongside older traces that survive in the surrounding countryside.

Poggibonsi's territory stretches between the plain carved by the Elsa River and the hills that lead into the Chianti landscape, made up of vine rows, olive groves, and coppiced woodland. The rural areas around the town offer countryside routes suited to walking and cycling, with views ranging from the clay calanchi typical of the area to the silhouette of San Gimignano's hills in the distance. Just outside town stands the Convento di San Lucchese, a religious complex set among greenery with a cloister and sacred artworks, a destination for visits and quiet moments. Routes toward neighboring villages also start from Poggibonsi, making the town a good base for exploring a less crowded side of Tuscany.

Poggibonsi's cuisine is rooted in Tuscan peasant tradition, featuring simple dishes such as ribollita soup, crostini with chicken liver pâté, and grilled meats, served alongside local unsalted bread. The surrounding hills, on the edge of the Chianti senese, produce quality wine and extra virgin olive oil, staples of local tables and markets.
