Introduction and location
Pienza sits on a hilltop in the province of Siena, within the Val d'Orcia, one of the most celebrated rural areas of southern Tuscany. It has no coastline and no major river running through it: its landscape is shaped by ridges, eroded clay hills and gentle slopes covered in wheat fields and vineyards. Its elevated position offers sweeping views over the surrounding valley, and its proximity to other historic villages makes it a convenient base for exploring the Sienese countryside by car or bicycle.
History and origins
The town has medieval origins, but owes its fame to a 15th-century urban transformation commissioned by a pope born locally, who brought in architects of his era to redesign the centre according to Renaissance ideals of harmony and proportion. This intervention made Pienza an early example of Renaissance urban planning, earning it recognition as a World Heritage site. Walking through its streets today, visitors can still sense that vision of an ideal city, with public and religious buildings arranged around a central square conceived as a unified stage.
Nature and landscape
Pienza's countryside is an integral part of the Val d'Orcia landscape, characterised by rows of cypress trees, isolated farmhouses, rolling fields and clay hills that shift colour with the seasons, from vivid spring green to golden summer hues and earthy autumn browns. This scenery, widely photographed and painted, is protected as an area of exceptional landscape value. Dirt roads branching out from the town centre invite walks and excursions through the countryside, with panoramic viewpoints opening up unexpectedly along the way.

The historic centre can be visited on foot in just a few hours, though it deserves unhurried time to be truly appreciated: narrow lanes, sudden glimpses of the valley and small artisan workshops invite a slower pace. Nature lovers can head into the surrounding countryside for a bike ride or a walk, while photography enthusiasts will find numerous vantage points over the valley, especially striking at sunrise and sunset.

Pienza is known throughout Italy for its pecorino cheese, made from the milk of sheep grazed on local pastures using techniques passed down through generations. Shops in the centre offer it at different stages of ageing, often paired with local honey or preserves. The local cuisine relies on simple, genuine products rooted in Tuscan farming tradition: extra-virgin olive oil, unsalted bread, legumes and cured meats, accompanied by the red wines typical of southern Tuscany. Seasonal fairs and markets offer a chance to discover these flavours directly from local producers.
