Montecatini Terme lies in north-central Tuscany, in the province of Pistoia, within the Valdinievole, a fertile plain enclosed by gentle hills. It sits just a short distance from Pistoia, Lucca and Florence, making it a convenient base for exploring the heart of Tuscany. The municipality includes both the lower town, home to the thermal establishments and the modern centre, and the ancient hilltop village of Montecatini Alto perched above it. This dual character, between plain and hill, gives the townscape a distinctive variety, with broad tree-lined avenues, parks and panoramic views over the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
History and origins
Montecatini owes its fame to the discovery and development of its thermal springs, known since the Middle Ages but truly valued from the eighteenth century onward, when the Grand Duchy of Tuscany promoted the construction of its first bathing establishments.
