Introduction and location
The town lies in the Valdinievole, a broad basin of central Tuscany framed by the Montalbano hills and the flat wetlands of the Fucecchio marsh, within easy reach of both Pistoia and Florence. Its oldest settlement once stood on the hilltop of Monsummano Alto, now a scenic hamlet, while the modern town grew up in the valley below, largely thanks to the renown of its thermal springs. Close to Montecatini Terme and the main roads crossing the plain, it makes a convenient base for exploring central Tuscany.
History and origins
Monsummano's origins go back to the Middle Ages, when the earliest settlement grew up in a defensible position on the hilltop, guarded by a fortress whose ruined walls survive today. In later centuries the village shared in the broader history of the Valdinievole, under growing Florentine influence. Between the 18th and 19th centuries the population gradually moved down into the valley, giving rise to the modern town, while the 19th-century discovery of a natural steam grotto brought fame and growth, linking the town's name to thermal wellbeing and to the poet Giuseppe Giusti, born here in 1809.
Nature and landscape
The municipal territory stretches between the slopes of the Montalbano hills, clothed in olive groves and woodland, and the flat expanse of the Fucecchio marsh, the largest inland wetland in Italy, shared with neighbouring towns. Home to numerous waterbird species, this area offers nature trails and observation points much loved by birdwatchers and walkers. The hills, meanwhile, provide sweeping views over the Valdinievole and are crossed by country lanes well suited to walking or cycling among olive groves, vineyards and old farmsteads.
What to do and see
Among the town's most distinctive experiences is a visit to the thermal spa built around a large natural karst grotto, where heat and steam form spontaneously deep underground, offering a wellness experience found almost nowhere else. In the historic centre, visitors can admire the collegiate church and the remains of the old fortress on the hill of Monsummano Alto, while the birthplace of poet Giuseppe Giusti now houses a small museum in his honour. In the hamlet of Montevettolini stands a Medici-era hunting villa, a reminder of the area's historic ties to the Medici family.
Flavours and traditions
Local cuisine is rooted in the rural traditions of the Valdinievole, built around simple, honest dishes made with extra-virgin olive oil from the Montalbano hills, seasonal vegetables, pulses and locally raised meat. Rustic soups, unsalted Tuscan bread and wine from the surrounding hillside farms are all part of the table. Alongside agriculture, the town also retains a long-standing craft tradition in shoemaking, an industry that for decades shaped the local economy of the Valdinievole together with thermal tourism.
