Introduction and location
Isola del Giglio is a municipality in the province of Grosseto that corresponds to the island of the same name in the Tuscan Archipelago, reached by ferry from Porto Santo Stefano on the Argentario promontory. The municipal territory is organised around three main settlements: Giglio Porto, the harbour and service centre; Giglio Castello, the medieval village perched on the island's summit; and Giglio Campese, facing the bay of the same name and its beach. The landscape is mostly rocky and hilly, with a jagged coastline alternating granite cliffs and small coves.
History and origins
Human presence on the island dates back a long time, favoured by its strategic position along Tyrrhenian sea routes. Over the centuries the territory saw different dominations pass through, from Roman times to the medieval period, when the threat of pirate raids made it necessary to build defensive fortifications around the village of Giglio Castello. The island later came under Pisan and then Medici influence, which reinforced the system of coastal watchtowers. The traditional economy has historically relied on fishing, terraced agriculture and granite quarrying.

The island lies within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the largest marine protected area in Europe, and its waters are renowned for their clarity and rich seabed life.
