Greve in Chianti lies in the province of Florence, along the valley of the Greve stream, a tributary of the Arno, at the heart of the Florentine Chianti district. The town sits roughly halfway between Florence and Siena, crossed by the Via Chiantigiana, the historic scenic road linking the two cities through hills planted with vines and olive trees. The municipal territory includes the main town and several hamlets scattered across the ridges, in a landscape that blends ancient villages, stone farmhouses and neat rows of vineyards, recognised worldwide as an iconic image of the Tuscan countryside.
History and origins
Greve's origins go back to the Middle Ages, when the small settlement grew as a market place below the fortified hamlet of Montefioralle, which remains its oldest nucleus. Over the centuries its position along the routes between Florence and Siena encouraged the town's commercial growth, long contested between the two rival republics before it settled firmly within Florentine territory. The town's name is also linked to the Da Verrazzano family, to whom local tradition attributes the navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, explorer of the North American coast, commemorated with a monument in the main square.
