Introduction and location
Gaiole in Chianti lies in the heart of Tuscany, in the province of Siena, along the road linking Florence and Siena through the Chianti region. The town belongs to the historic Chianti League, together with Radda in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti, an ancient medieval alliance formed to defend the territory. The landscape is shaped by gentle hills covered with vineyards, olive groves and woods of oak and chestnut trees, sloping down towards the valley of the Massellone stream. The small historic centre keeps a compact layout, with narrow lanes and stone buildings typical of Chianti's hilltop villages.
History and origins
Gaiole's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the area was long disputed between the republics of Florence and Siena. In the 13th century the village became part of the Chianti League, a defensive organisation set up by Florence to guard the southern edge of its territory. Several castles and fortifications, such as those of Brolio, Vertine and Meleto, still dot the municipal territory today, bearing witness to a past marked by conflicts and sieges. Once the wars between the two republics ended, the local economy gradually turned towards agriculture and wine production, an activity that has defined Gaiole ever since.

The countryside of Gaiole in Chianti spreads across a hilly landscape typical of the Chianti Classico area, alternating neat rows of vines with woods of oak, cypress and chestnut trees. What to do and see
In Gaiole's historic centre visitors can wander through stone alleys, small shops and the parish church, an ideal starting point to explore the surrounding countryside. Just outside the village stands Castello di Brolio, one of Chianti's best-known fortresses, with panoramic gardens and a historic wine cellar. Castello di Meleto and the fortified hamlet of Vertine still retain the appearance of medieval strongholds, while the Badia a Coltibuono abbey, set among the woods, combines religious architecture with agricultural production. Gaiole is also the starting point of L'Eroica, the vintage-bicycle cycling event that runs along the white gravel roads of Chianti.

Gaiole in Chianti is an integral part of the Chianti Classico production area, identified by the Black Rooster (Gallo Nero) trademark, and many local wineries open their cellars for tastings and guided tours. Alongside wine, extra virgin olive oil production is another pillar of the local agricultural economy. Traditional cuisine offers simple, genuine Tuscan dishes, often paired with wines from the area.
