Introduction and location
Cinigiano is a small town in the province of Grosseto, set in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma on the hills that slope down from the Ombrone valley toward the lower flanks of Monte Amiata. The village stands on a ridge overlooking a rolling landscape of vineyards, olive groves and woodland, roughly halfway between the Sienese hills of the Val d'Orcia and the Maremma coast. The municipality includes several hamlets, among them Monticello Amiata, Poggi del Sasso, Castiglioncello Bandini and Sasso d'Ombrone, each shaped by the surrounding countryside and its rural traditions.
History and origins
The origins of Cinigiano date back to the Middle Ages, when the area belonged to the estates of the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, lords of much of southern Maremma. Like many settlements in the region, the village later came under the influence of the Republic of Siena, which reinforced its defensive character thanks to its elevated, strategic hilltop position. After the fall of Siena, the town became part of the Medici Grand Duchy of Tuscany, sharing the administrative fate of the rest of the Maremma. Even today the historic centre's narrow lanes and stone houses preserve traces of this long history as a borderland between different powers.

The landscape around Cinigiano is classic rolling Maremma countryside, where rows of vines and olive trees give way to oak and chestnut woods as the land climbs toward Monte Amiata.
