Introduction and location
Cerreto Guidi stands on a ridge in the Empolese-Valdelsa area, in the province of Florence, at the point where the Arno valley meets the Padule di Fucecchio basin. The town stretches along the hilltop, dominated by the silhouette of the Medici villa above cultivated slopes. It borders the municipalities of Vinci, Fucecchio, Montespertoli and Empoli, in a strategic spot roughly midway between Florence and the Tyrrhenian coast, easy to reach by car and valued for the calm of a countryside still off the busiest tourist routes.
History and origins
The town's name recalls the Guidi counts, the powerful feudal family who in the Middle Ages held a castle on this hill, a strategic post between Florence and the Valdinievole. Drawn into Florence's orbit, the settlement underwent its greatest transformation in the sixteenth century, when Cosimo I de' Medici had an imposing hunting villa built between 1564 and 1567 on the remains of the old castle. The building, now part of the UNESCO serial site "Medici Villas and Gardens" listed in 2013, remains the clearest evidence of Cerreto Guidi's ties to the Tuscan grand-ducal court.

At the foot of the Cerreto Guidi hill lies the Padule di Fucecchio, the largest inland wetland in Italy, a mosaic of reed beds, canals and pools that hosts numerous waterbird species and forms a precious biodiversity oasis on the Tuscan plain.
