The story

The story of Castagneto Carducci

Introduction and location

Castagneto Carducci lies in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, along the coastal stretch known as the Costa degli Etruschi, between the hills of the Val di Cornia and the Tyrrhenian shoreline. The municipality includes several hamlets, among them Bolgheri, Donoratico and Marina di Castagneto Carducci, each with its own character: the hilltop village, the settlement along the Via Aurelia, and the coastal strip with pine forests and beaches. Its position between sea and hills makes the area a popular stop for visitors to southern Tuscany, amid farmland, vineyards and glimpses of the coast.

History and origins

The area's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the village of Bolgheri grew up around the castle of the Della Gherardesca family, still visible today in the historic centre. The municipality's name, Castagneto Carducci, combines the original name Castagneto with that of the poet Giosuè Carducci, who lived here as a child and made the place famous in his poem "Davanti San Guido", dedicated to the very avenue of cypresses linking Bolgheri to the Via Aurelia. In later centuries the local economy developed around agriculture, livestock farming and, more recently, quality winemaking.

Nature and landscape

The landscape of Castagneto Carducci alternates gentle hills planted with vineyards and olive groves with a stretch of low, sandy coast protected by extensive pine forests. The famous cypress avenue, winding for several kilometres through the fields towards Bolgheri, is one of the most photographed views in Tuscany. Along the shore, the pine woods near the Marina offer shade and cycle paths down to the beach, while the inland countryside retains the typical look of the Maremma, with rows of vines, cultivated fields and small rural hamlets scattered among the hills.

Things to do and see

Visitors to Castagneto Carducci can stroll through the narrow streets of the Bolgheri hamlet, clustered around the castle and the main square, or walk or cycle along the cypress avenue linking the village to the plain below. Local wineries, known for producing Bolgheri DOC wines, often offer tours and tastings among the vine rows. On the coast, Marina di Castagneto Carducci offers sandy beaches and bathing establishments suitable for families, while the inland areas are ideal for scenic routes through olive groves, vineyards and rural farmhouses.

Flavours and traditions

The cuisine of Castagneto Carducci is rooted in the farming traditions of the Livorno Maremma, with simple dishes based on local extra virgin olive oil, pulses, meats and seasonal vegetables. The area is internationally known for its winemaking: the hills around Bolgheri are home to highly regarded wines produced by long-established estates of the Bolgheri DOC denomination. Alongside wine, olive oil remains a signature product, and together with a broader food and wine offer it has, over recent decades, made the municipality a leading destination for wine tourism in Tuscany.
