Abbadia San Salvatore lies in the province of Siena, on the northern flank of Monte Amiata, the highest peak in southern Tuscany, at roughly 800 metres above sea level. The town grew up around an ancient Benedictine abbey that gave it its name, later becoming a reference point for the whole Amiata area. History and origins
The origins of Abbadia San Salvatore go back to the early Middle Ages, when the Benedictine Abbey of San Salvatore was founded, giving rise to the first settlement gathered around the monastery. During the twentieth century the town's story became linked to mining: the ground beneath Monte Amiata was rich in cinnabar, from which mercury was extracted, and for decades the mines employed much of the population, leaving an industrial legacy still recounted today.
