Historical roots: from farmland to coastal refuge

The history of Pevkoi is intrinsically linked to that of nearby Lindos. For centuries, this area was not an autonomous inhabited center, but served as a farming and holiday area for the wealthy families of Lindos. During the summer months, farmers and fishermen would move here to harvest the fruits of the land — olives, grapes, and figs — and to escape the sweltering heat of the walled town. The small white houses that today form the historic core of the village were originally simple warehouses or temporary residences. With the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese in the first half of the 20th century, the area began to see its first timid infrastructural developments, but it was only from the 1980s onward that Pevkoi transformed into a renowned tourist destination, while jealously preserving its identity tied to the land and the sea.

The Grotto of Agios Ioannis: spirituality and panorama

Perched on the hill overlooking the village, the small rock-cut church dedicated to Agios Ioannis (Saint John) is one of the most evocative and spiritual places in Pevkoi. Carved into a natural cavity in the rock, this tiny chapel is a perfect example of Greek popular devotion. The best period to visit Pevkoi runs from May to October. The months of May and June are ideal for those who love nature in bloom and mild temperatures, perfect for walks. July and August are the hottest and liveliest months, ideal for those seeking seaside life at full swing, although they are also the most crowded. September and October, on the other hand, offer a magical atmosphere: the sea is still warm, the days are clear, and the village regains that deep calm that characterizes it. Living Pevkoi means adapting to its rhythms: waking up early to enjoy the calm sea, resting in the hottest hours in the shade of the pines, and giving in to evening conviviality in the village squares.
