A plateau between Trento and the Valsugana
The Altopiano di Pinè lies east of Trento, on a plateau at around 1,000 metres above sea level, between the Adige valley and the Valsugana, at the foot of Monte Piné and not far from the Marzola. It can be reached in a few minutes by car from the Trentino capital, of which it has long been a favourite holiday destination thanks to its cool climate and closeness to the city. The area mainly comprises the municipalities of Baselga di Pinè and Bedollo, together with the historic hamlets of Faida, Miola, Rizzolaga, Vigo and Regnana, forming a mosaic of small settlements gathered around the lake basin.
Identity and history of the plateau
The history of Pinè is rooted in Trentino's rural, forestry and pastoral economy, with old mountain huts, sawmills and small workshops linked to the water of the lakes. During the twentieth century the plateau developed a tourist vocation, first as a summer holiday destination for Trentino families and later as a centre for winter sports, thanks above all to the tradition of speed skating tied to the ice rink of Baselga di Pinè. The Pinè Sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage, also bears witness to the deep popular devotion that has accompanied the life of the plateau's communities for centuries.
Landscape and nature among forests and lakes
The landscape of the Altopiano di Pinè is dominated by conifer forests, hay meadows and the two main bodies of water, Lake Serraia and Lake Piazze, surrounded by flat paths well suited to walking, jogging and cycling. All around, trails climb gently towards the Marzola and the surrounding woods, popular with hikers and mountain bikers. The mild summer climate makes the plateau a pleasant, cooler alternative to the valley floor, while in winter the frozen lakes and snow-covered meadows create a quiet landscape, ideal for outdoor skating and walks in the snow.
Villages and places to see
Baselga di Pinè is the main hub of the plateau, with shops, services and the historic ice rink that has hosted athletes and international-level competitions. Bedollo, a short distance away, keeps a more intimate layout of stone houses and a parish church, a starting point for walks into the surrounding woods. The Pinè Sanctuary, dedicated to the Madonna, stands in a secluded spot and is a place of devotion as well as a worthwhile short visit even for those not on pilgrimage. Around the two lakes run the walking paths most popular with visitors, with rest areas, equipped beaches and views over the plateau.
Food, wine and local traditions
The cuisine of the Altopiano di Pinè reflects its mountain vocation: mountain-hut cheeses, Trentino cured meats, porcini mushrooms gathered in the nearby woods and locally produced honey accompany polenta and canederli dishes typical of Trentino tradition. Blueberries and small forest fruits, grown and harvested on the plateau, are among the area's most distinctive products, often turned into jams and desserts. During the summer months the mountain huts open to visitors, offering direct tastings of fresh and aged cheeses, while local festivals still celebrate the seasonal rhythms of work in the woods and pastures.
