Geography and location
La Valle dei Laghi is located in west-central Trentino, between the provincial capital Trento and the northern shores of Lake Garda, along the corridor connecting the Adige Valley to the Sarca Valley. The territory includes the municipalities of Cavedine, Vallelaghi, and Madruzzo, the latter born from the merger of Calavino, Lasino, and Padergnone, while Vallelaghi brings together Fornace, Terlago, and Vezzano. The area takes its name from the numerous bodies of water that dot it, including the lakes of Toblino, Cavedine, Santa Massenza, and Terlago, set between the slopes of Monte Bondone and the Dolomite foothills of Paganella.
History and identity
La Valle dei Laghi ha una storia legata al suo ruolo di via di transito tra Trento e il Garda, percorsa fin dall'epoca romana e poi segnata dal potere dei principi vescovi di Trento, di cui la famiglia Madruzzo fu tra le più influenti: proprio a questa casata è dedicato il nome del comune nato nel 2016. I borghi della valle hanno conservato un'identità rurale fatta di viticoltura, agricoltura e piccola pesca lacustre, mentre l'amministrazione si è riorganizzata negli anni duemiladieci con le fusioni comunali che hanno dato vita a Vallelaghi e Madruzzo, mantenendo distinte le frazioni storiche.
Paesaggio e natura
Il paesaggio della Valle dei Laghi è definito dal contrasto tra le pareti rocciose che scendono verso l'acqua e i terrazzamenti coltivati a vite e ulivo, resi possibili da un microclima mite che risente dell'influenza del Garda. I laghi di Toblino, Cavedine e Santa Massenza sono circondati da canneti e boschi, habitat per uccelli acquatici, mentre il lago di Santa Massenza ospita anche una centrale idroelettrica storica. La zona è attraversata da una pista ciclabile che collega Trento al Garda, molto frequentata da cicloturisti, e offre sentieri escursionistici verso i versanti del Monte Bondone.
Borghi e luoghi da vedere
Among the symbolic places of the valley, Castel Toblino stands out, an ancient manor overlooking the lake of the same name, now a venue for events and dining. Sarche, a hamlet of Madruzzo, is the crossroads towards the Valle del Sarca and Lake Garda, while Calavino and Lasino preserve historic centers typical of Trentino villages. Vezzano and Terlago, hamlets of Vallelaghi, overlook the cultivated plain and Lake Terlago respectively. Cavedine, nestled on the lake of the same name, which is suitable for swimming, is a starting point for walks along the shore and towards the scattered farmsteads on the surrounding hills.
Food and traditions
The Valle dei Laghi is the homeland of Vino Santo Trentino DOC, a rare straw wine obtained from Nosiola grapes dried on racks called 'arele' until the following spring, when it is pressed on Holy Thursday. The territory also produces extra virgin olive oil, favored by the mild lake climate, and offers dishes related to lake fishing, such as 'pesce in carpione' (marinated fish). Wineries and farmhouses in the area, particularly between Calavino, Lasino, and Padergnone, offer tastings of Nosiola and Vino Santo, keeping alive a winemaking tradition passed down through generations of farming families.
