Geografia e posizione
La Strada del Vino dell'Alto Adige si sviluppa nella Bassa Atesina, la parte meridionale della provincia di Bolzano, lungo la valle dell'Adige tra le pendici delle Dolomiti e il massiccio del Monte di Mezzo. Il percorso classico collega Nalles e Andriano, a nord di Bolzano, con Salorno, ultimo comune di lingua tedesca prima del confine con il Trentino, toccando Appiano, Caldaro, Termeno, Cortina sulla Strada del Vino, Egna, Montagna e Cortaccia. Il fondovalle, attraversato dal fiume Adige e dalla ferrovia del Brennero, è fiancheggiato da versanti terrazzati coltivati a vite fino a diverse centinaia di metri di quota, in un microclima mite favorito dai monti circostanti.
Storia e identità
Officially established in 1964, the South Tyrolean Wine Route is the oldest wine route in Italy, but viticulture in this area dates back to the Rhaetian and Roman periods and has been preserved over the centuries by monasteries and farming families. The territory reflects the bilingual identity of South Tyrol, with Italian and German place names coexisting in the official names of the municipalities, such as Caldaro/Kaltern and Termeno/Tramin. It was in Termeno, according to a tradition widely held among ampelography scholars, that the Gewürztraminer grape variety is said to have originated, its name directly recalling the town.
Landscape and nature
The landscape is dominated by rows of vineyards arranged in terraces and pergolas, interspersed with apple orchards, hilly woods, and limestone and porphyry outcrops. Lake Caldaro, one of the warmest in the Alps thanks to its modest depth, offers summer swimming and shaded paths along its shores. To the west, the Mendola and Roen mountain groups frame the valley with forests and panoramic viewpoints also reachable by cable car from Caldaro, while to the east, the first Dolomite foothills of the Catinaccio can be seen, offering views of great contrast between rocky walls and expanses of vineyards.
Villages and places to see
Kaltern an der Weinstraße, mit seinem historischen Zentrum und der Nähe zum See, ist eines der meistbesuchten Zentren; Tramin an der Weinstraße bewahrt eine mittelalterliche Anlage mit Lauben und die Pfarrkirche mit dem gotischen Glockenturm. Eppan an der Weinstraße ist eigentlich eine Gemeinde, die sich über mehrere Fraktionen erstreckt, darunter St. Michael, Girlan und Missian, mit Schlössern wie Schloss Hocheppan, einem der eindrucksvollsten der Gegend. Neumarkt sticht durch seinen Laubenplatz aus der Renaissance hervor, einer der am besten erhaltenen in Südtirol, während Salurn mit seiner Burg und seiner Lage am Talende symbolisch die Sprachgrenze zum Trentino markiert.
Gastronomie und Traditionen
Die Gegend ist die Wiege von Südtirols Vorzeige-Rebsorten: Gewürztraminer aus Tramin, Vernatsch (Schiava), der traditionell rund um den Kalterer See angebaut wird, sowie Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, Sauvignon und Lagrein. Zahlreiche Kellereien, Genossenschaften und Familienbetriebe bieten Verkostungen entlang der gesamten Strecke an, oft in Kombination mit traditionellen südtiroler Bauernkost wie Knödeln, Speck und Strudel. Feste, die der Weinlese und dem neuen Wein gewidmet sind, sowie Märkte in den historischen Zentren prägen den lokalen Kalender, insbesondere zwischen Spätsommer und Herbst.
