Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino (Kaltern an der Weinstraße) is one of the most famous municipalities in South Tyrol, nestled on the hills that gently slope down towards its lake, along the historic route of the South Tyrolean Wine Route. The village combines terraced vineyards, apple orchards, and a particularly mild, almost Mediterranean climate in a single landscape, making it one of the most beloved destinations in the Oltradige (Überetsch). The pulsating heart of local life is the historic center in the Überetscher style, with houses featuring frescoed arcades, internal courtyards, and characteristic South Tyrolean Renaissance architecture, dominated by the profile of the Caldaro Castle. The village is home to the Kalterersee (Lake Caldaro), the light red wine made from Schiava/Vernatsch grapes, produced by generations of winemakers in numerous local wineries and featured in the South Tyrolean Wine Museum, housed in an ancient farmhouse. But it is Lake Caldaro itself, framed by reeds and a nature reserve, that brings the municipality its most international fame: it is considered the warmest bathing lake in the Alps, an ideal destination for swimming from May to September. Amidst rows of vines, panoramic trails, and a relaxed pace of life, Caldaro encapsulates the authentic essence of wine-producing South Tyrol within a few hills.

The wine municipality on the Wine Route

Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino is located in the Oltradige (Überetsch), the hilly area south of Bolzano crossed by the historic South Tyrolean Wine Route, one of the oldest and most appreciated wine tourism routes in Italy. The village develops on an amphitheater of vineyards that slope down towards the lake, in an ordered landscape of rows, dry stone walls, and small farmhouses. The sunny and sheltered position from the Alps creates a microclimate particularly favorable to viticulture, which has been an identity-defining activity here for centuries. Traveling along the Wine Route in Caldaro means passing through a succession of wineries, agriturismos, and panoramic viewpoints, with views ranging from the vineyards to the lake and up to the mountain range that closes the horizon. It is the ideal starting point for exploring the entire South Tyrolean wine itinerary.

Lake Caldaro, the warmest in the Alps

The historic center of Caldaro preserves the typical architecture of the Oltradige, called Überetscher: colorful houses with arcades, internal courtyards, stone windows, and decorated facades that tell of the South Tyrolean Renaissance influence. Strolling through the village streets, one encounters small squares, historic buildings, and glimpses of the surrounding vine-covered hills, in a secluded and well-kept atmosphere. Completing the municipality's cultural offering is the South Tyrolean Wine Museum, housed in an ancient farmstead and dedicated to the history of regional viticulture: work tools, barrels, documents, and thematic displays illustrate centuries of wine-growing tradition, offering visitors an in-depth understanding of the link between the territory, wine, and the community's daily life.

Apple orchards, mild climate, and excursions

In addition to vineyards, the territory of Caldaro is marked by apple orchards, another pillar of the South Tyrolean agricultural economy, which alternate with rows of vines, creating a varied agricultural landscape that is carefully tended in every season. The mild climate, almost Mediterranean for the alpine region, favors early blooms in spring and long, warm days in summer, making Caldaro pleasant to visit for most of the year. A network of panoramic paths develops around the village, connecting vineyards, farmsteads, and viewpoints over the lake and the mountain range, suitable for both leisurely walks and more challenging routes towards the surrounding highlands. The combination of the lake, vineyards, apple orchards, and paths makes Caldaro an ideal base for slow tourism, amidst nature, food and wine, and landscape.
