Mugello is the wide hilly basin north of Florence, crossed by the Sieve river and enclosed by the ridges of the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines. A land of medieval villages, Romanesque parish churches, and Medici villas, it combines rural landscape, historical craftsmanship, and a solid food and wine tradition, remaining one of the most authentic and lesser-known areas of Tuscany.

Geography and territory

Mugello occupies the northern part of the Metropolitan City of Florence, a vast pre-Alpine basin shaped by the Sieve river and its tributaries, which then flows towards the Arno. The territory includes the municipalities of Borgo San Lorenzo, Barberino di Mugello, Scarperia and San Piero, Vicchio, Dicomano, San Godenzo, Firenzuola, Marradi, and Palazzuolo sul Senio, distributed between the cultivated valley floor and the ridges of the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines, which mark the border with Emilia-Romagna. Historic passes such as the Passo della Futa and the Passo del Giogo have connected Tuscany to the Po Valley for centuries, while the artificial lake of Bilancino, near Barberino, is now a reference point for leisure and water management of the Sieve.

History and identity

Borgo San Lorenzo, the capital of Mugello, preserves the Romanesque parish church of San Lorenzo with its famous spiral bell tower and hosts the historic Fornace Chini, linked to the production of Art Nouveau ceramics. Scarperia, dominated by the Palazzo dei Vicari, has been known for centuries for the art of cutlers, still visible today in the workshops in the center. Vicchio, the birthplace of Giotto and Beato Angelico, overlooks the Mugello countryside, while San Piero a Sieve houses the convent of Bosco ai Frati. Marradi, beyond the Apennines towards Romagna, is linked to the poet Dino Campana, and Palazzuolo sul Senio is among the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Food and traditions

The cuisine of Mugello reflects its rural and mountainous vocation: among the best-known products, the Marrone di Marradi IGP stands out, the protagonist of the Chestnut Festival which enlivens the town every autumn, along with mushrooms, cheeses such as raviggiolo, and locally produced cured meats. The artisanal tradition intertwines with the gastronomic one, from the cutlery of Scarperia to the ceramics of Borgo San Lorenzo. Numerous village festivals, markets, and celebrations linked to the cycle of the seasons mark the year in the various municipalities, offering the opportunity to discover up close the products and crafts that have characterized the identity of Mugello for centuries.
