Geography of a region between the Adige River and the Alps
The Merano and Dintorni region extends in the western part of South Tyrol, where the Val Passiria descends towards the Merano basin and meets the Adige Valley and the entrance to the Val Venosta. Merano stands at the confluence of the Passirio River and the Adige, surrounded by reliefs that protect it from cold winds: to the north the Gruppo di Tessa, to the southeast the Alpi Sarentine with Monte San Vigilio. Around the city, Lana develops, spread among orchards on the valley floor, Tirolo and Scena in a panoramic position on the slopes, and Naturno, the gateway to the Val Venosta. The Val d'Ultimo, on the other hand, opens to the southwest, a more isolated and wooded side valley.
Tyrolean history and identity
Merano fu per secoli capitale della contea del Tirolo, ruolo mantenuto fino al 1848 quando la sede venne trasferita a Innsbruck. Il nome stesso della regione storica del Tirolo deriva da Castel Tirolo, la fortezza medievale che domina l'omonimo comune e che oggi ospita il Museo Storico-Culturale della Provincia di Bolzano. Nell'Ottocento asburgico Merano divenne rinomata stazione di cura, frequentata dall'aristocrazia mitteleuropea grazie al clima mite; ne restano testimonianza il Kurhaus in stile liberty e i viali di cura lungo il Passirio. La Val Passiria è legata alla memoria di Andreas Hofer, l'eroe tirolese che guidò l'insurrezione contro le truppe napoleoniche e bavaresi nel 1809, nato e cresciuto a San Leonardo in Passiria.
Paesaggio e natura tra terme e montagne
Il clima particolarmente mite ha reso Merano e i suoi dintorni una meta di villeggiatura sin dall'Ottocento: palme, agavi e cipressi convivono con meleti e vigneti sui declivi soleggiati, mentre poco più in alto iniziano boschi e pascoli alpini. Il Gruppo di Tessa, a nord della città, offre creste e valli glaciali frequentate da escursionisti, mentre la Val d'Ultimo conserva boschi di larici secolari e un carattere più selvaggio e isolato rispetto alla conca meranese. Le storiche passeggiate cittadine, come la Passeggiata Tappeiner sopra Merano e le Passeggiate d'Inverno e d'Estate lungo il Passirio, permettono di attraversare a piedi questa transizione tra vegetazione mediterranea e paesaggio alpino.
Borghi e luoghi da vedere
The historic center of Merano, with Via Portici and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, is complemented by the modern Merano Thermal Baths, designed by architect Matteo Thun. Just outside the city are the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, where Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi) stayed and which today also houses the Touriseum, the South Tyrolean tourism museum. In Tirolo, Tirolo Castle dominates, while in Scena, Schenna Castle, which belonged to the family of Archduke John of Austria, can be visited. Naturno houses the Church of St. Prokulus, with early medieval frescoes among the oldest in the Alpine region, and Lana is known for its orchards and for being a starting point towards the Val d'Ultimo.
Food and traditions
The cuisine of the Merano region combines Italian and Tyrolean influences: canederli, Alto Adige PGI speck, and apple strudel are accompanied by Alto Adige DOC wines, such as Vernatsch and Lagrein, grown on the sunny slopes around Merano and Lana. In autumn, the Merano WineFestival attracts enthusiasts and oenologists from all over Europe, while the Törggelen tradition brings chestnuts, new wine, and peasant dishes to the stube of farmhouses and agriturismos. Apples, widely grown between Lana and the Adige Valley, remain one of the region's symbolic products, along with the Christmas markets that liven up Merano in the winter season.
